Takeaways

So I have completed about 3-4 lessons now and I am in the process with about 3-4 more and I really like the takeaways that Brian gives during the lessons but I have come to the conclusion that after I finish a lesson I usually have forgotten most of the takeaways so I need to go back and watch the lesson again. Now that I have learned the piece it seems that the takeaways really seem to stick. Anyone else?

Hi Cobalt, the ones that stick with me are the ones I tie to something else I’m doing. The things Brian calls takeaways are potentially takeaways, if you have a use for them. After a little while with the lessons, you’ll find concepts repeating from one lesson to another. I think those things are takeaways too.

For instance, the little E minor riff that opens up EP267 became something else when I took it to G.

But not every takeaway has an immediate use. When you need it, you might remember it.

Hi Cobalt,
I have been at this for 3.5 years now and am probably a slow older learner but what I have found is that as Don says the bits keep cropping up one way or another in later lessons and because you have used them they become much easier to take up again and so the speed pick up too. So I think apart from the actual note aspect there are other areas to the take away that only manifest when you have spent some time here and been through a good few lessons. And guess what those notes slowly get in the fingers and the brain too.

After a while, you get to the point where you don’t need to memorize any more licks. You can just hear a note sequence (a lick) in your head, and you automatically will know how to play it. That is what is beginning to happen to you.
