So much has been happening in my world in the last month, both happy and sad, and of course – lots of work. I almost resolved to skipping this challenge but since I have already been occasionally practicing this little classical Etude in E minor, I thought maybe I could give this one a go with „playing a feeling”.
As simple as it seems, there are parts in there that turned out to be very challenging for me, especially the stretchy bar chord that repeats often. I recorded multiple takes on one of my rare days off and picked one, warts and all. This etude always gives me a sense of hope and nostalgia, a mix bag of feelings at the realization that everything – good or bad – will pass and become just a memory. I also added a verse to it with a slightly different feel.
Looking forward to watching all the subs this weekend when I get a chance 😊

A beautiful mix of modern and classical guitar styles to evoke emotion, and JoLa you achieved in abundance. I also admired the artistry in your approach however I didn’t hear or see any warts.

Wonderful, JoLa. Sounded very melancholy and even sad to me. But nevertheless very, very beautiful. And I loved the little, very tiny, warts – they made this real. Much better with than without them.
Do not let the workload keep you from doing what you love. And yes, work is something you can love, too. But a balance is needed. I am sure, you know that, but judging from myself it never hurts to be reminded.
Well, I have to take my own advice here and start finishing this tax declaration in order to complete my submission …😬
The break of watching your submission was totally worth it!!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽Bluesige Grüße

Guitar music that reminds me of the classical style in Spain. An extraordinary piece that inspires me to dream.
Thank you very much, Werner

Beautifully played and *very* emotive! Outstanding work, as ever!
…I’m not crying, it’s just raining indoors…
BTW – how did you record it? The guitar sounds amazing!

Thanks so much, wpb 🙂
The Yamaha silent guitar was plugged into Yamaha THR30ii amp and the amp was connected to Scarlett 2i2 interface via 1/4″cable. There is, unfortunately – as Michael noticed – a high frequency buzz that I tried to fight but ran out of time to fix it. Work in progress, I guess 😉

Hi Jola,
Very well played !
The feeling I got from start to finish was Peace and tranquility. Your intro with slide was slow and softly played. Some of your chord stretches were difficult and played nicely.
You created an awesome vibe ! 🎶🎵🙂Don P

I think that’s the first classical piece I’ve heard on the challenges – I’m so glad you did it. It was really beautiful (and emotive) but I didn’t defect the flaws you mentioned. Some of those chords looked really difficult but you got them spot on. The right hand fingering also looked difficult. Well done.

That was beautiful Jola and so well played. You have the fingerstyle down to a great level of expressiveness.
In case you are unaware, there is a high frequency hum sound coming out of your amplifier that is somewhat annoying (it’s subtle), but it’s definitely there. It can easily be filtered out using an equalizer in post. With my luck, no one else can hear it, but I noticed it in your last recording so I assume it must be your amplifier. It’s not a big deal, I just thought I would let you know about it. I also do amp repair, and it sounds like a bad power filter capacitor to me. That would be the first thing I would check.
Just a short story:
When I would visit my aging parents and when their TV was on, I could clearly hear a high frequency noise coming from their TV. They however could not hear it at all. I had to suffer through it for years on every visit. So that drove me crazy until the day they finally got a new TV.
Root note patterns >>> CAGED shapes >>> TRIAD'S. Just put in the work and watch your guitar skills soar.

Oh, I’m aware, Michael! I went through a lot of trouble trying to get rid of it (post process) and obviously, failed – just ran out of time. If you don’t mind, I’ll send you a P.M. You say, “It can easily be filtered out using an equalizer in post.” I’ve tried that but maybe I didn’t do it right?

Glad you found the time to make it , I didn’t detect any warts , those finger stretches did look difficult but you pulled them off .Martin

I very much like your intro with the slide and it blends so well with that famous classical piece. Wow, sooo well and fluently played. Your silent guitar sounded like a “classical” guitar. That must have taken a lot of exercise and time. Beautiful and moving piece of music. I hope you will soon find a bit more time for yourself.
Thanks for sharing, JoLa.More Blues!

A wonderful mix of classical music and your own creative motifs. I played this piece from sheet music a long time ago—but it didn’t sound nearly as impressive.

And that’s how you create something like this in such a short time, Jola. Amazing! It conveys such a sense of calm and makes it seem as if you had all the time in the world.
It’s wonderful how you’ve complemented the etude with the slide technique. It captures the mood and adds yet another dimension to the whole piece.
Beautiful!Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom.
The next Meetup will take place on October 31For more information click here
I look forward to meet you.

That looks a little like some of the classical guitar pieces I’ve tried in the past. The first part seems straight forward only for the second variation to go off the deep end!!! Glad you stuck at it because it’s a beautiful and fluent performance. There’s nothing quite like a classical piece to emote such a sense of sadness mixed with hope and beauty, especially when its in Em. Loved those sonorous slide bridges with the subtle delay. Hope all life’s disturbance turn to just memories for you soon.

JoLa
Just wanted to say I cannot even hear an ‘annoying’ hum. OMG really? Once again, you never cease to amaze me. It’s all so wistful and haunting and it draws me in. I didn’t want to let go or for it to end. I do think music that evokes sadness feels good. It’s not that we like pain but rather helps us draw out stuffed sadness in a safe space. You often show that simple can be the most powerful. Thanks for your inspiration.Oh, and about the Lipstick thing… there is no such thing. It was a play on words “adding lipstick” is my metaphor for using enhancements like reverb, delay, distortion. I rarely use it, favor the dry, wooden clean sound of a guitar (electric or acoustic). However, I accidently put some echo delay on my piece and though “Whoa”, maybe I will doll this up a bit before I take her out in public. So I hope you are not still looking for ‘Lipstick Reverb.” You sound amazing.

Wonderful Jola, you seem to always pull something out that appears to have been practiced for months and play it to perfection despite time restraints. So versatile, playing classical and slide. And the Yamaha, good choice.

Hi Jola, really, really nice! Well played, and I’m struck especially by your talent for combining your own unique ideas. The slide addition here was brilliant. Whether this etude, or one of Brian’s lessons, you always have a creative arrangement or variation that makes it truly your own. Glad you made it to the challenge this month!
