It was a bit of a double challenge this month. I joined a songwriting group and they had set a challenge of writing a two chord song. My effort became an instrumental in C and F in which I’ve tried to convey the emotion of nostalgia: that melancholy-but-not-quite-sad feeling of looking back on a fond memory from a past you can’t get back.
The pictures are from a walk we did a couple of years ago from our front door, in Farnham, to the City of Canterbury in the south east of the UK. The walk follows the chalk hills, known as the North Downs, across the south of England for around 120 miles (193 Km) and is, in part, an ancient pilgrimage route. It passes through pretty villages, ancient woodlands, historic sites and open countryside.
Looking forward to an emotional challenge weekend 😅

You’ve outdone yourself this month, Andy, that was beautiful. This sounds so professionally composed and recorded. Am I hearing 3 guitars? Absolutely gorgeous.
I’m curious about how many miles of the walk you might have done.-

Many thanks John,
You’re absolutely right. 3 Guitars.
A Martin 000 for the finger style rhythm and main lead
Gretsch resonator towards the end for a bit of slide to highlight some of the phrases
and an over driven Tele for the chord stabs in the final section. The whole walk is 153 miles and ends on the coast at Dover (of White Cliffs and Vera Lynn fame). We probably did about 130 miles to get to Canterbury when diversions to hotels were taken into account. It took us 10 days. Canterbury is my wife’s home town and her Mum still lives there. We liked the idea of working out our front door and into hers 😄. We walked the final section to Dover last August when we were down in Canterbury visiting (took the car there that time!)

It certainly sounded nostalgic to me Andy. Very nicely produced and beautiful video.

That’s the best you’ve every played, Andy….and it’s your own!
Beautiful acoustic guitar composition. I like the simplicity of the 2 chords.
Great layering of the rhythm arpeggios and melody. I like how you built up the melody, with repetitions and slight changes and how you left space between.
Yes, I can also hear a 3rd guitar in-between. Do I hear the slide guitar?Great recording sound, too. The pictures make me want to make a pilgrimage, too. Is the North Downs way the pilgrimage track of the Canterbury tales?
More Blues!

Many thanks, Denise. I’m really glad you liked it. I enjoyed putting this one together and very pleased with how it turned out.
Your ears didn’t deceive you, there is a bit of slide guitar at the end and 3 guitars though the Martin played two parts. The finger style rhythm and the lead
The North Downs Way is based on the pilgrimage track from the Canterbury Tales. That track, the Pilgrim’s Way still exists but has become major roads in a lot places, so its not much fun to walk along. The North Downs Way follows it, but to one side up on the top of the downs away from the roads. So it’s a kind of modern version for walkers. The two are one and the same in some parts of the route though. You pass many places with the word “Pilgrim” in their names.

A wonderful guitar piece. You can really feel the atmosphere of a walk in the woods. Absolutely, absolutely great.

That was so impressive on many counts Andy. I’ve always believed there’s nothing quite so strong as music and accompanying imagery to evoke nostalgic memories. Your original composition and stunning North Downs scenes did exactly that. Thanks …..

That was brilliant Andy. Everything was perfect, composition, playing, production and the photography, and all done on two chords. It all came together so well and evoked the emotion that you described.

A lovely composition, Andy. Played and recorded and mixed professionally. Great job with the video too. A hundred and thirty miles is a long walk!

This one grabbed me right from the start. So good and well recorded. The melody line is superb. The song has a very calming effect on my soul.
Root note patterns >>> CAGED shapes >>> TRIAD'S. Just put in the work and watch your guitar skills soar.

One of your best, Andy – if not THE best ever! From the first beautiful acoustic note to the last gorgeous ending slide at the end, this was truly a masterpiece. What a great story, too! The pilgrimage walk imagery along with your emotive melody made me nostalgic about Europe and the way people appreciate their history there. I’d love to do that kind of walk adventure one day … thank you for the beautiful music, that’s a double winner, for sure!

So, so pretty, Andy – you came up with a very calming and peaceful composition that, rather than melancholy, gave me a feeling of tranquillity. Coupled with some beautiful images from your North Downs walk, the whole submission was pure pleasure. – Mark 👍🎶😎

I love this blend of contemplative music that still radiates so much joy. On top of that, the whole thing is so beautifully composed and wonderfully performed, Andy, and the images you’ve chosen go perfectly with it. An all-around great post!
Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom.
The next Meetup will take place on October 31There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum very soon
