I’m tossing around the idea of setting up a recording station and would appreciate any input that you might be able to share.

I used to be into stereo systems big time and currently I have a power amp by B&K Component, company now defunct, that pushed 150 wpc into 8 ohms and this particular amp has about 2 db of clean headroom, so it can easily pump out about 250 watts.

I also have a pair of JBL shelf speakers that I picked up at a rummage sale for $5, and they would make great monitor speakers.

My question is this, would the out put of PC sound card be enough to push this amp or is there a better way to accomplish this? May run the PC sound card into an unpowered mixer then into the amp?

I’m really green on this so if you have experience with this, please share.

          Hi Keith,
I run my pc out to a cheap Behringer USB audio interface that came with my Behringer mixer Xenyx 1204. I believe it now comes built into their mixers. I did use a Firewire interface, but it is not supported in Windows 7 (no driver) I am quite happy with the results as the latency is quite low. I then run the mixer to an old Yamaha amplifier that I’ve attached a pair of P.A. speakers. I wouldn’t use the audio built into the PC as I don’t think it’s up to the task & it’s better to have the I/F external unless you buy an expensive card meant for DAW’s (Digital Audio Workstations). I like having the mixer as I can use up to 6 inputs to record into my computer. I use Mixcraft 5, Audition, Audacity as my main recording software. I record with Mixcraft & then use Audition or Audacity for editing. Usually I use what I’m most familiar with to get things done quickly without having to refer to manuals.
