        Hi all,
Just after some advice as I’m a bit confused over one part of the lesson.
When Brian moves to the C shaped G chord he says he is playing of major pentatonic pattern 4. I was of the belief pattern 3 was for the C chord shape and 4 is for the A shape.

Can anybody shed any light as to what I’m missing here please?
        Thanks 😎

          Hi Gareth,
I guess it depends how you number the boxes. I look at it as the G shaped chord fits over box 1 major pentatonic, E shaped chord over box 2, D shaped chord over box 3, C shaped chord over Box 4, A shaped chord over box 5. I think that’s Brian’s convention. Some people call the E shaped position box 1.

            G’day Gareth.

Just to add to John’s good explanation – for the C chord shape, you will use Pattern 3 when playing from the Minor Pentatonic, but when you go to the Major Pentatonic scale, you use Pattern 4 (just as with the E chord shape we are most familiar with, you use Pattern 1 when playing from the Minor Pentatonic, but use Pattern 2 when you go to the Major Pentatonic).

In other words, the Major Pentatonic pattern will be the next pattern up from the Minor Pentatonic pattern for that chord shape.

            Hope this helps.

            Rick

                Hi
This lesson is great but I am struggling a little with understanding the different patterns. Is there a lesson just on the 5 different patterns or can you recommend some go to literature which simply explains the 5 patterns? I am in danger of learning parrat fashion…

This could help visualize CAGED positions in minor and major scales:

                  CAGED shapes: E D C A G

                  Minor scale positions: 1 2 3 4 5

                  Major scale positions: 2 3 4 5 1
