This is one my downstairs neighbor, Jamie, and I did last week. It started as a bunch of informal jam sessions and, eventually, morphed into this structured atmospheric composition where we layered in different tracks and allowed this to build over time.

What’s interesting is Jamie and I are very different musicians with my influences being primarily classical and his being punk rock. We have found a way to capitalize on each others strengths i think. In the end, I think we are pretty happy with this. I have to credit Jamie not only for his outstanding rythm and lead guitar skills but his wizardry with recording and mixing. He has a full music studio in his living room 😲.

As an aside, i dont think i could have done this without Brians lessons. 😉

There was a droning B note with the G major scale which had that Phrygian sound to it. B Phrygian to be exact. That’s not an easy one to be musical with but you both pulled it off very well.

Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Hi Michael. This is probably a bit embarrassing but I don’t even know what key were playing in 🤪. I just picked a bunch of open sounding ‘spacey’ suspended chords and we went with that. It was a completely play by ear thing though I know that i gravitate to phrygian sound on account of my love of Spanish and Arabic music.

In my defense, I could analyze it all and work it all out but I generally just go with what I feel sounds good 😉

Cool stuff Geoff! You’re a man of many talents and now you can add psychedelic to your CV! Watched and listened all the way through. Great blend of the Jazzmaster and the Les Paul. Fantastic to have musical neighbours. Thoroughly enjoyed this. All the best! 😎🎸😎

                          That was sooo good, Geoff.
I’m going to disagree with Michael. Without studying it too hard I think Geoff’s part was based around diads and triads and phrases out of E minor/Gmajor or even dissonant chords made out of the E minor pentatonic boxes. The beauty of E minor/E minor pentatonic is that the open strings are all notes of E minor pentatonic and most can be used as drones or as part of unusual sounding chords.
Geoff’s neighbour appeared to be soloing out of E minor/E minor pentatonic.

That sounds about right John. I certainly made a lot of use of open strings on my part. Also true about the diads and trials- tiny itty bitty chords wre something i used as a backdrop to what Jamie was doing on the lead. I like minimalist options 🙂

Whoops, your right. I initially heard a drone B note @1:38 for some odd reason, but it is in fact an E note that persists through the rest of the piece. Any G major scale note would work over this, but it’s just E Aeolian and thus Em pentatonic is perfectly fitting as well. Guess what would have happened had that drone note shifted to a B?

This is really good…. you both compliment each other nicely…. just flat out raw/finished/mesmerizing and highly entertaining. You might think about making this the soundtrack to some psycho-thriller movie. That’s it, celebrate your musical differences. I think that kind of thing brings out the best in band mates. Well done, both of you.

Thanks Jonn. A soundtrack to something anyway. It would be a good track to play when I am on my painful runs – the rhythm is something I could pace myself to 😊

It’s amazing what emerges when two musicians with completely different backgrounds get together. That was so cool and totally unexpected. It took me back to those prog rock days of my youth. It was completely absorbing. The way it slowly built drew one in and those angry rock chords were a terrific contrast to the spacey chord theme. Well done, that was epic!
