I understand that Brian will soon put up a new module of lessons on Playing the Chord Changes: Module 4. Meanwhile, can you (anybody) direct me to a few of the Playing the Changes lessons that have been especially helpful for you?

ML106 explains the process pretty good, but I would caution not to get too far ahead of yourself. I don’t know what your background is because you still have not filled out your profile, but playing in key is a whole lot of fun. When you combine that with switching from major to minor or vis versa, that’s way more important to learn before the chord changes.

Playing the chord changes all ties in with the CAGED system and knowing how to play your basic 1-4-5 chords in one place on the fretboard. Additionally, arpeggio’s come into play along with chromatic walk up’s and down’s.

Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Thank you Micheal. You offer good advice. As I work on the various skills you identify, I also want to slowly discover how to better use arpeggions. I had a teacher many years ago who taught me appeggion patterns and said, for him, learning how to play leads best begins with arpeggios, not pentatonics. I learned the patterns, and enjoyed the process, only later realizing that he meant for them to vary with the chord changes. I never go there, but the idea intrigued me. That’s why I so enjoyed Microlession 106 on playing the chord changes. I redo it every day as a fingering exercise, and I like the way it plays a melody as well as a lead. You write: “arpeggio’s come into play along with chromatic walk up’s and down’s.” That speaks to me. Still, I know I need to work on the others, too – so I’ll take your advice. I know the pentatonics well, major and minor, and thus know how to play a “lead” with them, staying in the key of the root. I don’t shift so much from major to minor in songs with major keys, but will do so. Still I miss the melodies. If you have in further advice given what I’ve just shared, please offer it. It not, I understand.
