I traded the Revstar in for this. I would have passed it by if it weren’t for the helpful staff that saw that I struggled to find a neck that had the right fit and finish. They suggested this one, and I’ll be darned, it played really well and felt great in my hands. The neck has a light satin finish that almost feels like bare wood, but it’s not. It also has a thicker old 50’s style neck unlike that thin neck on my standard telecaster. It’s not really a telecaster, but it’s of that variety and has that same versatility. I just love that I finally have really nice frets and it plays really well. Probably would not work for anyone with smaller hands, but it fits me really well.
I just had way to much problems playing the revstar, I could not manipulate the upper strings like I normally do to keep them out of the way of my bends. It could have been a setup thing, but I just did not want to go through all of that and find out I still didn’t like it. This swamp ash guitar plays just as good as my Stratocaster, and has the type of frets and playability that will make me happy.

What are those pickups? I’ve never seen anything like them
Yes, medium jumbo frets, and they are perfect. The pickups are PRS Narrowfield DD “S” pickups. They technically are humbuckers but configured to sound like single coil pickups. The sound is close, but different. Plus they are noise canceling, so no hum.
I honestly did not pay much attention to the pickups as much as how it played and felt, so that’s what sold me on it. The intonation out of the box is just about perfect on all the strings except the low E string. So I’ll adjust that later.
Very impressed by the sound so far, but the playability is better than anything I’ve played to date. I considered some of the other PRS models first, but none of them had the same playability as this one. The only drawback is the weight on these very wildly. I think this one is close to 8lbs, which is typical for the batches that are currently in stores, some of the earlier ones weighed only 7 lbs. Guess they ran out of the lighter ash.

The frets are not stainless steel though. I assumed they were, but they are nickel fret wire.
The way the strings attach to that top bridge plate is a little unusual. It makes changing strings a bit challenging because the ends just slip under slots in the back of the top bridge plate. So they do not go all the way through the body like just about every other guitar on the planet. Possibly using a capo to hold the string in place while getting the initial wind in place will help. If the tuners were locking, then it wouldn’t ever be an issue.

Nice looking guitar Mike. I love my PRS CE 24.
I tried all of those guitars out and I would have got one of those if it had a satin neck, but I really dislike those glossy finishes on the back of the neck. Of course, I now know that I favor a thicker type neck. I never liked my thin style telecaster neck and will probably replace the neck with something else entirely if I can find a thicker neck replacement for it. 1″ U shape with satin finish is for me. Additionally, medium jumbo frets is a good choice.
