This is a great lesson, I’m having a good time learning it on the acoustic. Was wondering if anybody can tell me what the format of this piece is? The lesson deals with playing to the changes with arpeggios and the E major scale. I don’t want to just learn how to play the piece I want to understand exactly what I’m doing. where the chord changes come on what bar. I know it’s marked down in the tab and in the interactive Player, but I’m still trying to understand exactly what’s going on I don’t know if Im making any sense I hope so

          Hey Todd,

I’m pretty sure Brian talks about the chords and where they come from in the first video. Have you watched it ?

              Hi Todd,
I think I know where you’re coming from.
There doesn’t seem to be any recognized format, like an 8 or 12 bar blues, it just is what it is. It’s kind of 2 or 3 bars of E, 2 bars of A and 3 bars of B7 with a different format for the end, just as the tab is notated.
The licks and even harmonized 3rds are related to the CAGED shape for each chord, ie. C shape for the E, E shape for the A and G shape for the B7 but some of the notes of the licks come out of the fuller E major scale as played over the C shape of the tonic E chord ( the key of the song), which keeps you in the same position for those note choices.
              Hope that helps.
              John

The song has an extensive use of the major 3rd (ie G# note in Key of E).
This takes it away from a blues feel.
Also in bar 4 over the A chord we have the riff – A G# F# E C#. The G# is the Maj 7 of A, F# is the sixth.
So A G# F# E C# is implying a chord progression of A, Amag7, A6, A which is as far away from a blues progression as you can get. Strum them and you see . This phrase is also reminiscent of the song Ashokan Farewell.
Else where in the song its back to standard blues.
