Hello Fellow AM’rs;
For the March 2024 challenge I created a three chord tune using AM, DM and E. I explained what I did below the video link. I learned a lot from the CAGED series and had fun with this challenge. I hope you are all doing well.
Starting out I used open chord form arpeggiating the notes. Next I slid into the Am using the E barre chord form. I transitioned to the Dm using the Am barre chord form then sliding up to the 7th fret E major using the A barre chord form. I then used triads on strings 1, 2 and 3. The first was sliding into Am using the E shape, then sliding to Dm using the Am shape then E7 using a modified C7 shape (because I liked the sound😊).
Next I played Am using the D shape, then Dm using the E shape and the E major using the G shape.
The melody I added was A minor harmonic scale (Am with a sharp 7) in three different locations on the neck with harmonic tones on String 1 at fr 12 and 5.I managed to use all the CAGED positions somewhere in the composition. This was a great challenge. I thought the CAGED series was fantastic. There was a lot of great information in those lessons.
The painting I showed at the end was done by my wife’s Aunt Brenda. She is so talented and we feel fortunate to have it in our home.

You have explored very well all the CAGED shapes of these 3 chords all over the neck, in a very nice composition that has a enjoyable classic music vibe, Pap! Nice arpeggios and rhythm strumming! Congratulations to your wife on her nice painting! Well done!

Wow, Pap, I can see and hear you put a lot of work in this. And it was worth it, you created such a fine composition even with harmonics in it. You didn’t make it easy for yourself, but you really mastered it with your contagious enthusiasm.
You can be so proud!Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup will probably take place in July/August 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

There ya go Pap, moving those chords all over the fretboard. You’ve obviously got these concepts well in hand.

It sounded like a classical piece with great rhythm and sweet melody. And of course perfect example of the CAGED system. Well done Pap! Thank you. Also, that’s a great painting by Aunt Brenda!

Nice work, Pap! Congratulations on creating your own composition for this CAGED exercise, that’s a great way to practice the shapes and melodies! Love the chord progression you chose and yes, the harmonic minor scale gives us the classical flair. That was well done – and the painting is awesome! Great centerpiece 🙂

A great display of fretboard knowledge on CAGED and at times I could hear you thinking Pap. Answer to your question; I used a free writer document, Libra Office, you could use any word/graphic program to do the slides. Insert a rectangle shape with colour. Add another rectangle (bright green) that will be the green/blue screen when you put it above your playing video in iMovie. Everything is copy and paste and inserted text, I had around 13 slides. I then used preview to do a print screen of each slide and saved them (1-13). Each slide then placed in iMovie on the timeline at the right timing.

You certainly explored the fingerboard well Pap, I enjoyed the chord progression and particularly the enthusiasm you showed throughout. As watercolour artist myself, I would be intrigued to know Aunt Brenda’s thought process when she produced that painting ….. interesting subjects!

Hey Richard. that is a great question. I had asked her that when we purchased the painting from her and she either could not articulate what was going through her mind or chose not to. I am not sure which.

Hi Pap, great to see creativity blooming as your grasp of the CAGED shapes comes along. And, a lot of music created from just 3 chords! Congrats on putting together your own music.

Excellent composition and performance Pap. Love how you walk up, grab your guitar, and play so well. Also interesting how leveraging ideas like CAGED and use of harmonics, embellishments, and strum patterns as you did creates a great song. Very well done. I also like your Aunt painting very much and am similarly thankful to have more than a dozen family paintings at home. Take care, Tom

This is a great demonstration of CAGED mastery with a really nice composition Pap. I liked how you moved around between arpeggios, some strumming, and some runs all within the CAGED system. Great submission Pap!
