I’m looking for some lighting to brighten up my videos. My music room is small and cluttered so I need something that’s not too heavy and easy to setup and take down. I have no idea what I need but I found these on Amazon…do you think they’ll work? Even these look a little big. I think they’re 24″ square. But I don’t know if something smaller would have enough light? Help!

My music area is relatively dark and that’s exactly what I use, Joe. They are light but bulky. I just put them in a storage area without folding them up. They should give adequate light without excessive shadows.

With my iPhone, even if I shoot a video in a very dark room, it comes out looking like it’s in a well-lit room. iPhones are famous for their light-gathering abilities. So I have never bothered with adding artificial light. But here’s what I learned a long time ago:
If you are recording during daylight hours, never shoot a video when there is a window behind you. Face the window and keep the camera between you and the window. I’ve posted well over 100 videos, and it seems to me the lighting was mostly perfect. Of course, it’s a different story if you record at night…..

For some reason when I use my phone to record I still always have to tweak the color settings to brighten it up and darken the shadows etc. Then it starts to look grainy. I don’t have one of the pro iPhones with the fancy cameras that have center stage and stuff so maybe that’s the reason. My room has one overhead ceiling light/fan and one window which makes the shadows horrendous. I’m hoping the lights I bought will do the trick.

I’m glad Charjo endorses the product. I do agree with Steve as well. However, if you shoot at night you don’t have the day’s sunlight to enhance your video and you run the risk of excessive noise. I’ve learned what not do do but at times still struggle getting the most from the light available. I get them, and work them into to your videography journey. Keep us posted!

They should work fine Joe. The result should be similar to a spotlight directed into a white ‘photography umbrella’ which gives a soft diffused light with no sharp shadows.
