June 2026 Challenge – Dieter

While searching for music with just two chords, I thought of the Rolling Stones’ only instrumental song from 1964— “2120 South Michigan Avenue,” which they recorded at the studio of the same name in Chicago.
It consists solely of G7 and C7, with some improvisation.

I kept the driving, constantly repeating bass riff from the original. To add depth to the accompaniment, I opted for very simple rhythm guitar patterns and a varied line for the electric organ. And to make the whole thing sound more interesting, I wrote short solo passages for blues harmonica, the organ, and electric guitar.

The entire recording process was relatively complicated because I had initially written some of the individual parts and improvised others, and during the recording I couldn’t remember exactly how I’d played certain sections.
In the end, though, it all worked out, and here’s the result.
