Greetings guitar world. Here I am in York (northern England) spending a few day’s with my daughter and son in Law. Weather is a little wet and windy but not a problem for me.
I’m sat with my son in-law’s Yamaha Pacifica and tiny Marshall MG10 amp. Going through Brians excellant free lessons.
I’m a born again player after a long lay off. My current electric guitar is an Epiphone Dot with Mississipi Queens P90 pick ups. Great sound.
However, this Pacifica is a great player. I really like it. A local guitar shop has a used top of the range Pacifica 812v in mint condition, which i’m really tempted to buy
Another shop in town has a range of mexican strats. I particularly liked the 50’s classic player. It has all those great strat tones. On the other hand the Pacifica is so versatile with a coil split humbucker at the bridge. Very nicely finished too with great build quality.
Both guitars are about the same price. So what am I going to do? Anybody got any advice?

Hi Carter and welcome to the forum. I too just joined and like you it sounds like we have a lot of time on our hands to play the guitar. I’ve never played a Pacifica, but it sounds exciting. I think buying a new guitar does motivate one into learning new stuff and even playing more. I have a Fender Telecaster, the first one I ever owned. It took me about 7 years before I took it out of the closet and really started playing it. The neck was too fat for my not so big hands. Well, these days it’s my shadow. I was very lucky to buy it. Just seems to have that childhood Fender magic as I remember as a 12 year.
Good luck on buying your next guitar. Do try them out on the best amp in the shop, that way you’ll want to leave with a new amp also. LOL I have a Marshall British made amp that was made in 85, solid as can be. Put in a 12 in British made Celestion Vintage 30 and I’m very happy with it. But I too would like to buy something, hopefully a Fender Super Reverb. Had one back in the 70’s.
Well, have fun shopping.

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

I bought the used 812V Pacifica!
I compared it to a standard mexican strat and tele which were around the same price new. The Yamaha just seemed to be a much more professional quality guitar. The seymour duncan vintage single coils and the Jeff Buck humbucker at the bridge sounded so good. I love the build quality.
I may have to adopt my playing style a little as it is very sensitive to pick attack and also I’m used to palm muting on the bridge which means my pick is directly over the middle pick up. I have to re-position my right hand a little.
Anyway, I’m very pleaesed with it and it sounds great with my AC30 through the top boost channel. Not so great through my transistor Peavey amp though. Really shows up the difference between a transistor and a traditional valve amp.
Can’t wait to show it off at our next jam session. My mate lives out in the sticks. No nieghbours to upset!

The Pacifica was voted best budget guitar when it first came out by most guitar publications. I saw it used by many professionals as well so they must have known something. They also brought out a Tele style Pacifica that I liked very much but the one I wish I had now was a 12 string Strat style that they produced but since dropped. It also got good reviews but 12 string electrics come & go so quickly. Danelectro brought out one a few years ago & I saw it being played by Crowded House, but now you can’t find them for love nor money.
Enjoy the new guitar. That Epi sounds great too, I have a Fernandez Les Paul Gold Top with p90’s in my collection & it’s a classic guitar with a wonderful tone.
Cheers
