        HI AMers,

I thought I would share a quick recording of a bass cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Wish’. This was such a blast to learn and play, and it’s really made me fall in love with the bass guitar.

I’m hoping to play bass live in a few months, and get into jazz jam sessions. I thought a good start would be learning to play comfortably and get used to different bass tones.

Frustratingly I’m struggling with the sound of my fingers on the strings. There’s a lot of squeaking and sliding noise that I’m unsure how to get rid of when I play. If anyone has tips for this, I’d appreciate it.

If anyone knows of any blues bass pieces, I’d love some suggestions

This is a short scale Fender MIJ Jazz Bass which I recently purchased. Im having issues with hand pain at the moment, so this has helped. It’s a nice middle ground between a full size bass and the scale length of an electric guitar.

Thanks for watching, and as always thank you all for you support and for being a great community

Dang Ben, that is outstanding bass playing. I know what you mean about the scratching, but I honestly would not worry about that. You are grooving to the max on this demo. You will be jamming live soon. You got this.

Jazz is a bit more involved, but something tells me you will conquer it and be really good at this. Any band would love to have you as a bass player. I like the fact that you got into the groove and stayed solidly in the groove the whole time. I’m so proud of your progress on this. Did you show this to your instructor yet?

Thanks so much. I really loved playing this. I’ve put out a few expressions of interest for music groups etc, but haven’t heard anything yet.

And nope, but I’ve just sent it to him!

Really great walking bass lines! I like the bass because it was my first instrument I learnt to play.

Thanks Martin! Out of interest would you ever be interested in performing? Bath Music Workshop do a 5 week course (Friday evenings) for adults. I assume it’s not too far from you, so thought I’d mention it

Hi Ben. To be honest I’ve never gave it much thought, I’m always so busy with work etc , and Bath is just under an hour away, so not really local , but thanks for mentioning

I can’t play bass but I can guess what you played so well and with a great groove is not easy at all (well, it would not be easy even on guitar 😅)! Very enjoyable rendition.

Thanks very much for watching 🙂 appreciate your comment. It looks quite complicated to play but it’s actually pretty straight forward once you get the patterns down

I had the same noises when I started playing bass.
I think it’s question of really putting pressure on the fret.
Has to squeaks its in the strings.
                                  Maybe try flat wound strings.
But i didn’t try those cuz I love the actual string I got on, like yours.
You played this one really good and its a though one.

I’ve been considering flat wounds, but they are a lot more expensive than I realized! I think I may have to get some though, especially as I want to play live.

                                      Thanks for your comment 🙂

Wow, you aced that Ben! I think string scratches are part of the territory and didn’t notice it at all as I got deeper and deeper into your playing.

Thanks Joe, appreciate your comment. Frustratingly the sliding sounded a lot louder in real life so definitely something I need to figure out. Another thing to learn!
