Check out Steve Vai’s amazing licks and phrasing. Does anyone know where I can get the tabs for this? (Just kidding)

I think the devil has a copy at the Crossroads!Mike

I was still marvelling at his smooth chord changes when he hit the ‘beserk’ button.
Maybe our next Challenge? “Choose a lesson and sort your hair out while playing the hard bit”!

Haha, and he can keep playing with his left hand while he smooths his hair with his right hand.

OK, don’t hate me for this but, I was never a fan of Steve Vai. I mean, he’s a fantastic player, and can shred very fast, but I think I just prefer fewer notes and more feeling. I’m probably the only one that thinks like this but there it is…not a fan.

I thought there was a truck load of feeling in that. I’m not a big fan either but heh he can play!

I think the same about Steve Vai. Technically a fantastic player….but his playing is not “saying” really much. I admire guitarists who build up their solos, telling us a story, let the listener breath, like Josh Smith…and Brian of course.

I’m not really a Steve Vai fan either, but I have big respect for his playing ability. And in fairness, there are some more mellow parts to his performance that sound pretty good. Then, he goes off the deep end.

Before he hit the full tilt Steve Hai shredder button, he was playing typical octave type licks ala Wes Montgomery mixed with some Brother Jimi style choral licks – but with a lot of Steve Vai stage attitude added LOL – licks such as what we hear in Castles Made of Sand
Lee Ritenour is a Wes Montgomery disciple and plays octave licks effortlessly; in this live set, Lee opens the song with a very funky interchange with his keyboard player and around the 2 minute mark, the Wes Montgomery influence starts to shine
Also included a link to a Wes tribute album that Lee released several years ago
Enjoy

Steve Vai is certainly a talented musician, no one can argue that, like his style or not. What I find most interesting is the mix of music and showmanship. You find this in most top level players, at least to some degree. On the subtle side it maybe just a smile and looking at the audience, then it grows from there. The music is often top-quality (sometimes not), but acts filling arenas are show-people.

I can listen to Lee Ritenour all day…something I can’t say about Steve Vai. As I said, Steve Vai is a fantastic player and I respect his skills very much. But I prefer the buttery smooth Lee Ritenour sound which is much more pleasing to my ear.

He is a showman for sure. I knew Stevie Vai from his music and the movie Crossroads but like others in this thread, not a big fan. And then a friend invited me to see him play locally. One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. He is truly a guitar virtuoso. On top of that he draws the audience in to participate in creating music on the fly so you think, heck if I had an Ibanez like that and a finger stretcher, look out! He was a student of Joe Satriani and Frank Zappa and this guy can flat play ANYTHING!

I think whether or not you like the style you have to admire his ability. For me I wouldn’t run out and purchase his music but I totally enjoy a blast of it here and there.
