I Am the Blues opened where I am last Wednesday and I saw it yesterday. In a theater that holds 200, there were six people for the second of three shows yesterday, which is really a shame. The director was here last week Wednesday and Thursday, so I am hoping that huge crowds turned out then (now I feel like I should have made more of an effort to be there).
It “takes the audience on a musical journey through the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou, the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta and Moonshine soaked BBQs in the North Mississippi Hill Country” to quote the movie promo. I can’t do better than that. I was beautiful, deep and the sound was excellent, better than live, partly due to the theater’s sound system.
Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Lazy Lester, Barbara Lynn, Henry Gray, Bobby Rush, Carol Fran, Little Freddie King, Bilbo Walker, R.L. Boyce, L.C. Ulmer and others, including one guy who played and sung so well but wasn’t identified in the film like most everyone else (or I blinked and missed it—it’s the guy about 25 seconds in to the clip below, seen first with a guitar then in a car; I plan to post a comment about him once I find out who he is and a little more about him).
It tells it like it was, and is. There are a bunch of film clips on this page. You’ll probably leave with a headful of things you’ll want to play.
I can’t say enough good things about this movie.

R.L. Boyce was the incredible singer guitarist whose identity I was seeking. He’s just so, so, so on the money.
Here are several videos in no particular order. Dig, dag, dug?
