Before I used a DAW I loaded Brian’s backing track on to a looper and then recorded my video playing live over the replaying track.
Today I use a looper purely to practice licks over a backing but also laying down new runs or sequences when I’m creating parts for a new solo. I find that quicker than laying the test pieces into a DAW.Richard

That’s brilliant 😂.
It reminded me of a Katy Tunstall story when someone in the crowd shouted out “My name is David” while she was setting up a loop. It got repeated for the entire song! Another of the perils of live looping I guess 😅

Hey Andy, that reminded me of the time back in 2011 when I got my new car with fancy voice activated features and after learning how to utilize many of the commands, I tried to show it off to one of my buddies while he was in the passenger seat. As soon as I would start to give a voice command, my friend would start talking over me and ruining my commands. He just kept laughing after repeated attempts. I then realized how worthless the whole voice command system really was unless you are alone in your vehicle.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Great joke. I bought a looper and have had so much fun and progress with it I upgraded to a better model recently.
When I did the initial research on loopers before my first purchase, I was advised to get a 2 button model as they are easier to get started with. My looper at that stage was the Ditto X2. While there have been times I didn’t get the timing right with my loops, overall I found the process quite easy.
I’ve had several other muso friends who struggled with the single button loopers try my X2 and they both reported it was a lot easier for them compared to the single button models.
I recently upgraded to the Bosss RC-500. Why? It let’s me save multiple tracks and even name them.
How / what do I use it for? Several things. I was working on a riff for a particular song and wasn’t sure if my timing was out by a half or full beat. Putting down the chord sequence of the song made it easy for me to then play the riff over it and guess what… my timing was actually fine,.
The other thing I use it a lot for is practicing soloing. I save the chord sequence for the song I want to use for my solos and then just play over it endlessly. I often use it together with my Boss DR-01S drum gadget to record at various tempos.
At this stage I don’t have aspirations to use it for public performances. Some of what others do with loopers doesn’t do a lot for me.
