Hello to all AM members,
I’d like to start fingerstyle.
Which lessons would you recommend?
Thanks in advance. -

Hi Carpa, I could help if I knew whether you already play some fingerstyle pieces and are looking for new lessons from Brian or you are totally new to the style of using fingers instead of a pick and seeking tuition from the start.

Hey Richard,
I’ve been playing guitar for many years, but with a pick.
Now I want to start fingerpicking, so I’m starting from scratch.-

Hi Carpa,
Brian has posted quite a few fingerstyle lessons, some of which William has listed below but it’s true to say Brian doesn’t post lessons on exactly how to start playing fingerstyle.
There are three main types of fingerstyle used in acoustic blues, Monotonic Thumb, Alternating Thumb (or Travis Picking)and Shuffle Bass Thumb. The videos I’ve included below are some of the better ones currently available on YouTube. The Tommy Emmanuel and Paul Davids ones are particularly smart.
Start very very slow until your muscle-memory kicks in before speeding up. If you put the time in practising you will be handsomely rewarded time after time.
All the best Carpa, let me know if you want any further help.

EP319 is a good place to start. As Brian states in the lesson, it’s easy. It doesn’t require alternating base which makes it easier.
