Hey Folks, hope everybody is well,
I have a question about lesson EP 365 the Dickey Betts solo lesson.
I’ve been trying to play the fast version of this lesson for a long time now, but that one part with the 16th notes I just can’t get up to speed on that no matter how hard I try. Is that really 100 BPM because it seems like a lot faster. I’m going by what it says on the top of the tab that says 100. Am I reading that right? Maybe I’m having a hard time playing correctly to a metronome, because when I set my metronome two 100 BPM and play that lick, I can manage it a lot better than trying to play along with the lesson minus guitar. Could somebody please check that and tell me if it’s really 100 BPM I may be missing something
thank you,

I checked again N saw that it really is 100 BPM and I tried to delete my post cant seem to figure out how to delete it. Anyway I think now that the BPM is right, I’m just having a hard time playing those 16th notes within that BPM

Hey Todd
EP565…. 16th notes can be tricky.
I suppose that you’ve tried that piece of music at 70 BPM? I find that if I start at 70% tempo on something like this it’s major help until I really get it under my fingers
Once I’m comfortable @ 70%, I increase the tempo by 5% until I reach 100If you haven’t already done so, find what sequence of alternate picking on these licks work best for you. Being aware of this can make a huge difference in the execution of a lick

I look forward to hearing your submission Todd…
Anything about The Allman Brothers, Duane Allman, Gregg Allman & Dickey Betts is right up my alley. I first heard Duane’s stinging slide lick opening Statesboro Blues way back in 1974 and I’ve been hooked on their music ever since. Duane had been dead 2 1/2 yrs when I heard that lick but it didn’t matter to me – I devoured their music
Over the years, I’ve come to revere Dickey Betts not only as a player but as a composer and a leader. The ABB wasn’t the same at all after he left in 2000
I may actually like Dickey’s playing more that Duane’s….. that’s a tough one LOLI don’t know that the ABB would have survived without his leadership
Here’s a great tune that features Dickey. On the Brothers & Sister, the song was Jelly Jelly – they had an outtake that was the same melody/music that is called Early Morning Blues and Dickey’s blues guitar abilities really comes to light with this

Todd,
Alternate picking speed is an issue for many of us. I’ve had the occasional lick I just can’t get and finally just resorted to a pull-off in a problem spot. Consider the odd hammer-on and pull-off in those fast licks until your picking speed progresses.
Also, like Keith suggests, analyze the problem area and see if there’s a more efficient way to pick or try different fingerings in the left hand. Sometimes two sequential downpicks can make a phrase easier.

Thanks John, I’ve been fooling with this lesson for a long time. Ive tried everything you guys suggested. I think I’m close. Brian always says he’s not fast, but he does ok to me
