John H and I had this interesting little online chat about Brian’s lessons. One thing I think we both agree on is Brian’s earlier lessons were harder and not necessarily playable by everyone. He pointed out that this lesson was one of the hardest he ran into. Intrigued, i had to have a go at it 😅.
Certainly, his ridiculous speed on this is not doable for most people and i had to tick that down a bit. Mostly this is hard because the timing has to be very precise and getting that chop chop chop sound on the chords requires some muting talent that I really needed to work on. On top of all that, he packed in a lot of theory around chord progressions.
That said, I had a bunch of fun with this. I focused more on that than on producing a great improv or video. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a more challenging lesson 🤔

Great job on this, Geoff. Good tempo and you played it so cleanly. Some of Brian’s Rockabilly lessons are certainly among his most difficult.
I think the synchronization issue took a bit away from how well you played this.

Thanks for giving this a listen John.

Bravo Geoff. Love your interpretation here. Congrats for taking this mighty beast on. This is a lifetime lesson, one in which you will improve, put away and relearn. I still wank away on it. 😉. Keep Rockin’ my friend.

After you pointed out this lesson, I couldn’t resist. So, thanks for that John.
This certainly is a lifetime lesson but will I come back to it ? Not so sure. There is always something new for me to get into. One lesson I have been back to more than once is EP178 which is, in my opinion, even harder. I have tried very hard on that one to emulate what Brian did there and I just haven’t been able to.

I thought your timing was pretty spot on Geoff and it sounded really good. I don’t think I have the chops to attempt this yet…at least not at your tempo.

Thanks Joe. Most of Brian’s lessons one can get away with with playing slower but this one is an exception. It needs to be fast and I cannot comfortably do the speed Brian did on this one.

You have some good feel for the rhythm on this one Geoff. I’m impressed.
Root note patterns >>> CAGED shapes >>> TRIAD'S. Just put in the work and watch your guitar skills soar.

Thanks Michael. Truth be told I actually enjoy playing rhythm more than lead.

That’s super-fast rockabilly at its best. Your improvisation on it is truly excellent. I played that song once about four years ago, but unfortunately I wasn’t up to improvising on it. Great performance.

Well that’s high praise indeed. Thanks Dieter!
I will say this is one of the toughest tracks I have attempted to put an improv to. Can’t really put a finger on why but it makes a lot of use of 6 and 9 chords and I find it hard to know how to use them well. Even worse were the diminished transitions which I have absolutely no feel for -:)

Very impressive Geoff. I’ve thought about giving this a go quite a while ago and have been deterred because of the speed. I’m pretty sure it’s out of my league. You really nailed it and at a speed I reckon that true rockabilly players would be very pleased with. Rock on Geoff! All the best! 😎🎸😎

Looks like a workout for sure.

Thanks Alan. That is the reason I chose my Jazzmaster for this one. Generally, I favor more mellow tones but I felt this one needed the bright tones I can get on my Jazzmaster’s bridge pickup.

Great lesson! First of all, thanks Geoff for highlighting it, first time I listened to it.
And great playing, the rhythm parts flawlessly played with a great timing. I checked it out out of curiosity the original Brian’s rendition, and it’s like speed light, but also the tempo of your version is quite fast and I guess very difficult to play along with such precision.
Congrats on your rendition!

Thanks much Guido and, yes, Brian’s speed on this is ridiculous and intimidating. I think he was playing it as around 150bpm which I could do poorly so I just ticked it back to 140bpm which is a lot more comfortable for me.
I have always thought that being able to play fast on guitar is a ‘nice to have’ skill but the least important of them. For that reason, i have never really put my focus on speed but this particular lesson actually does require it. Fortunately, most of Brian’s lessons do not.
