Denise and I found we have a common interest in Brian’s rhythm based lessons and I was delighted when she agreed to collaborate with me on one. After a few exchanges, the slow bluesy groove that is EP188 was chosen.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect (ahem!), coinciding with a road trip to the Northern Australian outback, a holiday in Biarritz, the European Football Championship and Denise’s pet cat, Robin, unfortunately being taken ill.
But we’ve finally got it all together. The original lesson has been extended, adding a call and response section in the middle and our own rhythm ideas for the supporting guitars.EP188 became the soundtrack for both our holidays as thoughts and ideas were exchanged whenever phone reception allowed. So we thought we’d share some of those memories with you too.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did putting it together. -

Wonderful, chilled, feel to that, Andy & Denise. Beautifully played 👍🎶
I created a CD mix of mainly Smooth Jazz to accompany a road trip on my Goldwing down the Pacific Coast Highway some years ago – your tune would fit this perfectly! 😎
Best wishes to you both ❤️

Great collaboration on one of my favourite lessons. Loved how you both put your own spin on it and traded all those great licks. It’s not often that we see members make alterations to the rhythm parts, that made it for me. Denise, you made nice use of the tremolo arm.

It’s been so much fun doing this collab and sharing of process (and holiday pics) with Andy!
He’s given me some musical support and did a great job on the video editing.

Good teamwork !
Sounds like a Chris Rea song -

Great duo! You developed your own rythm parts and lead melodies, sharing and switching both parts seamlessly, in a wonderful way! Really very enojoyable to listen to your rendition! I agree with Philippe, the resulting piece has also for me a Chris Rea’s style vibe, which is of course a very good thing!

What a lovely, relaxing vibe and yet filled with positive energy from each of your collaborated renditions. Nicely done. Makes ya wanna have a convertible so you can put he top down while listening to this one on the road.

Hi Andy and Denise. Wow! Fantastic overall production here. Rhythm was tight, leads were fluent and had a real smooth blues feel. Loved that you changed up the lesson and added your own ideas and the added photography was absolute icing on the cake. Hope both holidays went well. Denise, hope Robin has recovered and Andy, good luck with your Lockdown, I know how you feel! All the best!

Many thanks Garry. I think we’re going to be locked down for a few more weeks at least but getting used to it. Most frustrating thing is I had my new PRS in for a set up which is done now but I can’t collect it! Still something to look forward too.

Wonderfully crafted collaboration Denise and Andy. Had a Gilmour-ish feel to it. Lead and rhythm trade-offs were precise and the sound quality excellent. A great listen. Loved the videos. I’ve just added this lesson to my queue.

Many thanks everyone for all your comments. This was a first time collaboration for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Denise, it was great working with you on this and sharing all those different musical ideas. I’m still getting a buzz from your changed up rhythm on the final cycles!

Holy Smokes! If that’s not THE BEST collaboration on this forum and the best showcase of two talented musicians playing (virtually) together, I don’t know what is! I watched it a few times just to figure out who is playing what and I am totally stunned at the quality of this music. Denise and Andy, you both sounded fantastic, in just the right mix of awesome rhythm and beautiful lead lines, soooooo gooood, both of you!
And of course, I gotta mention the video – seriously the best compilation I have seen! I wouldn’t even know how to make this so entertaining and fluent and perfectly synced with the music, even the two sunsets at the end!
Both of you are very talented and professional sounding, I can only imagine you guys jamming in person, wow! The vacation images looked marvelous, it looks like it was time well spent. Hope the cat is better now 🙂

Many thanks for those kind comments Jola, so glad you enjoyed listening and watching. It was certainly a project which grew as as we worked on it. The video did present a new challenge but was a lot of fun and since Sydney is in lockdown a good way to pass the time!

Oh yes, I would love to do another collab with Andy sometime. As we both share the interest in groovy rhythm lessons, it might be some kind of funky-blues stuff with fill licks!

Wonderful showcase. Love how you bounced back and forth with the rhythm and leads and the video is as good as the music.

Very nicely done Denise and Andy. I did this lesson some time back and it just sounds so much better as a duo like this. Liked some of the customized rhythms and leads put into this too.
Video very nicely put together too.
All this recording and putting together of separate tracks is a whole new skill I am only just starting to learn.
Great stuff.

Many thanks Geoff, and I hope you enjoy the recording and videoing journey you’re embarking on. In some ways it’s not unlike learning the guitar you learn something then later you learn something else that builds on it. The good news is, unlike the guitar, once you’ve learnt something you don’t need to practice it!

Well I will tell you Andy, its been a pretty steep learning curve. For a while I gave up on it and just continued to use my cell phone.
Now I am doing a collaboration with Bob Utberg and I have had to learn more about this. Finally got to the point where I can record my sound track separately using my Focusrite and merge that with video using Da Vinci Resolve. Getting there slowly – enjoyable and frustrating at the same time.

Just got round to watching and listening to this great collaboration, Have to say that I did get a bit confused by the 4 screens playing at the same time but that’s probably because it isn’t time for a beer yet hahahahaha
Great stuff, really impressive...Billy..

Hey Andy, on second listening of this I am even more impressed than I was the first time.
I just love the custom rhythms and leads both of you put in this, very seamless and really professional sounding. You guys sounded like sesson musicians recording in a studio – serioulsy good. Really liked the way you guys put this togetner right down to sound, video everything.
Great work.

Hi Andy
How do you do the on line collaboration like that, I don’t know where to start.

September 12, 2021 at 5:14 am #271497
Hi Michael,
EVey collaboration is going to be a bit different and that’s the fun but there’s probably 4 parts to it.
First, reach out too someone to collaborate with. That’s probably best done by sending a friend request from the forum so that you can communicate with them privately.
Next decide what you want to do together and elect one of you to be responsible for putting together the sound and video production.
Third is the fun part, actually doing the playing and recording, sound and video.
Last is to collect all the peices together and assemble video with everyone getting a chance to review and comment on it.
In our case the project evolved as we went along with new ideas about what to try out and include. e.g. swapping rhythm and licks with each other in the second part here. That’s one of the most rewarding parts, sharing ideas with each other and developing them. We also exchanged lots of recordings with each other before our final takes so that we knew what each other was intending to play and tune how the ‘responses’ to each others playing would sound.
Not only is she a fine player but Denise has a great ear too, which was fantastic for developing those ideas and sharing feedback on what was working.Hope that helps!
Andy

Guys you absolutely crushed this.
Awesome playing and you both didn’t drop a single note throughout it just cannot be faulted.
It’s got everything a collaboration should have – style, tone, and execution and you delivered on all.
Excellent visuals also you should be immensely proud of this.
This might be my favourite submission yet.
Liam.

Fantastic collaboration, Denise and Andy! Loved listening to this! And watching the wonderful video! Brilliant holiday memories! Such a positive energetic vibe about the music and the video.
What I love about this collaboration is that, although performed ‘across the miles’, it is seamless.. to the listener’s ear, you could easily be in the same room playing together…
Your epic production has a wonderful Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler feel… bravo!
