I’ve tons of songs that I started to learn many years ago and never being able to play them from start to finish in a real rendition. In fact this isn’t even the oldest one, but If I remember well I started to practice it something like 8 years ago.
Of course the superb and spotless Watson’s finger picking here is very hard to learn and if you want also to sing along (and in a foreign language for me) the difficulty raises up a lot.So I decide to try to record it, the real thing from start to finish, even I felt should improve a lot more.
Of course I made a lot of mistakes and imperfections in playing the guitar, not to mention that I’m afraid I butchered a bit (or a lot?) the lyrics 😅, but at least I have a starting point!
So here my rendition (I want to mention also that 2-3 years ago our AM friend James B. played and sung an excellent cover of this one, very inspiring, and I suggest you to listen to it):

Wow Guido, that’s excellent high-speed picking, including vocals and genuine blues feeling made in Italy. I just love this authentic vibe.

Sounding fantastic, Guido! Superb fingerpicking skills and I like that tone on your Resonator. Great singing, too.
You did a great job on that famous song!
Bravissimo!

Superb post with an iconic song Guido. Congratulations to you for taking on the vocals, this is not an easy piece to play let alone sing as well.
I posted this number back in Oct 23 but certainly wasn’t brave enough to sing at the same time.Richard

Hi Guido, that was excellent!! Yes, it is very difficult to pick and sing a song such as this. I don’t think I could do near as good using my native tongue (which is unfortunately the only language I know!)

Very well done Guido! 👏👏.
Your picking on that sounded great and it must have taken a lot of practice to get that down so well.

Wow, Guido! You nailed this one perfectly – your finger-picking technique and vocals are superb. Marvelous! It would be hard to improve on your performance. As a side note, I was fortunate to meet Doc Watson and his son Merle in 1968. They performed at my college, which was a very small school in Pennsylvania, and after their incredible show I was able to meet them and talk to them for a while. Both of them have passed on but they left us some truly wonderful traditional American music as an enduring legacy.

Thanks David! Wow, it must have a been a thrill to meet Doc and his son Merle back in the days! I’ve seen some video of them playing together on YouTube, and they were fantastic.

A really great job Guido!! The picking was right on, and the lyrics weren’t too shabby either!! Getting that thumb in sync has always been my downfall, but you have it mastered!! Again, great job!! Sal

That was outstanding Guido… Nicely picked and of course well sung. It’s a fact of guitar playing life that we make mistakes and have to play through them. The good news is I couldn’t detect where you made a mistake or too so congrats on that. You sure can sing and play. You should be busking or playing out live somewhere. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Great job on this tune, Guido. Quite an accomplishment to pick and sing such a classic song. I can relate to how long you’ve been working on this one. I spent about three years trying to learn “Deep River Blues”.

Superb playing Guido.
You don’t need or should want to do it as good as Doc Watson – this has plenty of charm coming from your own personality and I thought it was brilliant.
If I was watching you for the first time I wouldn’t need convincing of your accomplishments as a musician.
That for me is what counts.
Well done.
Liam.

Nice take on this classic tune Guido, you played that finger style so fluently, and to sing on top of it is quite an accomplishment.
Love the resonator tone .
I enjoyed listening , well played.Martin

Massive applause on this Guido! 👏👏👏🌟👏👏👏. I really appreciate the difficulty here, singing the lyrics and finger picking at the same time: not easy! Couple that with (as you said), a foreign language and the intricate finger work on this deserves the highest praise. It’s been fantastic to see and hear members levels of improvement over the last 4-5 years and your playing is definitely right up there! Very enjoyable performance. Hope all is well. All the best! 😎🎸😎
