Hey folks, I found this studio interview/recap from Tom Bukovac really interesting.
Quick aside: we have Sirius XM in the car and I usually have on Willie’s RoadHouse or 40s Junction, but when my wife and daughter are in the car they insist on mixing it up with The Pulse, which is basically Top 40 for today; lots of Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Olivia Rodrigo, etc. Well they were having a Top songs of the week, Casey Kasem style countdown and amongst all the computer generated drum and bass tracks this really authentic sounding Country song came on: Choosing Texas. I immediately knew it just had real humans playing and it wasn’t over produced, auto-tuned to hell. It sounds like a real song.
Turns out it was Uncle Larry playing the intro riff and other electric guitar parts. One of the things I found interesting in the video with the engineer he did, when isolating his tracks, is just how sparse his playing is on the chorus and how that interplays with the vocal.
Check it out:
Interesting post, Bill. Just an incredible number of tracks on that recording. Not many of us have to worry about the restraint thing. Good to hear you have your finger on “The Pulse”.😉
