Hi Members,
I have been celebrating Canada Day with my strat emulating my guitar hero, Jimi Hendrix.
I have made a 60 b/m backing track of Hey Joe. As hard as I tried, I could not get through this without at least one mistake. The chords are C-G-D-A-E-E with the intro and chromatic run added. I did some hammer-ons and slides with the open chords and used some of the tricks in Brian’s Hendrix rhythm course on the bar chords.
I would be very excited if anyone downloaded the track as an mp3 and added their own E minor pentatonic lead over it and reposted the collaboration. Try Brian’s blues course, the Albert King licks or listen to Hendrix on the original. Hope you enjoy it.John

Hey! Nice playing. Good vibes going on there.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Thanks, Pete. Nobody’s up for the “challenge” though.

Man Charjo, I really thought that was great! The few mistakes were so minor that they weren’t really noticeable…or wouldn’t have been if you hadn’t mentioned that they were there.
I think your idea of the “challenge” is a good one. I’d do it, but then this nice playing would be junkified by my more crappier playing! This has only been up a day, you might get a taker yet! If all else fails, keep this track because it’s good, and then add your own solo over the top!

Well I will preface this by saying I am somewhat new to lead playing. Here is my response warts and all.
Great idea Charjo!

Nice work, Charjo. You’ve got a nice Jimi vibe and tone. Wondering what guitar you’re playing, sounds almost like an acoustic. Nice amp tone. Very clean playing, every note clear, but lots of those little double stop things that define Jimi’s playing.
I’ll gladly take up your challenge (especially as a Canadian) but I need a few days to clear my calendar.
Nice work by Bryce too, I hear Brian’s influence in those pentatonics.
Looking forward to getting some time, this is fun. -

Right on! That was cool! And fun as well.
So what Bryce, did you just bang that out in the last 30-minutes?I wonder if we could get Brian to “take the challenge”?

Yay, Bryce! I think we made AM history! Your warts and my warts sounded great together. I can tell you I took a lot more time to put my part together, you know I’ve been working on this for a few days now.
Moose, I’m playing this on the neck pick up of my strat directly into my Ipad through Garageband. I chose the “Sparkling Clean” (simulated Fender silverface) amp which is matched with a Vibe and Compression pedal. I added a bit of gain, presence and reverb to the amp settings. I’m looking forward to your version, also, and I am hoping for some “volume swells”.
C’mon Jeem, take your time; you can do it. Steal some of Brian’s licks!
Again, great job, Bryce. I hope some others will pick up the challenge and that we can see more collaborations in future.John

Wow just caught this one. Great playing charjo. You have a sweet groove going there. And Bryce that lead interpretation was pretty cool.
Nicely done guys. You are miles beyond me.

Oh, Brian! That was so tasteful and lovely. The vibrato and the timing and choice of phrases just had me smiling. I heard a little JJ Cale in there and definitely some Clapton influence. You should make your guitar a little louder, I would love to hear your lead a little better over the rhythm. You give us lot’s to aim for. Thanks for taking up the challenge.

Hi Guys,
This is very cool! I have always only strummed the Chords for this song. I am now learning the solo in E minor.
Hopefully have an attempt soon!
(Just a technical question: how do I accompany Charjo’s track? Do I have to join Soundcloud?)
Cheers,
Rich F.

Hi Rich,
Hope you can keep this thread alive with another posting. On the Soundcloud page there might be symbols under the track. If you see a downward pointing arrow over a line, that will download the mp3 to your computer. If you are not able to, private message me with your email and I will send it to you (or anyone else that wants to give it a shot).

Hello John,
Hope you enjoy Canada day celebrations!! I must say, I can celebrate as well. I do have ties to Canada. My grand parents, both father and mother’s side were born in Canada. When I was born, french was the language spoken on our house. In fact, french was what I learned to speak until I was about 6. I remember a story my mother told me years ago. When I started to play out side, I only spoke french and all the other kids spoke English. One day I was playing out side with the neighbor friend, and my mother was sitting talking with his mother while we played. I had fallen and started to cry. My neighbor friend turned to his mother and said. ” Mommy, Mark cry’s in English” True story.
By the next year my parents took me out of the French Catholic school and into public school system. That was the beginning of the end of my French…PS. I do listen to your “Hey Joe” often on soundcloud. It’s very good, Never knew that Bryce played lead on it as well. Very cool!!!

Hi, these are all very cool variants. An old classic in a new guise.
Well done.Wilfried
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Nice playing, Charjo- very smooth and laid back, I love it! I may have to try my hand at lead over this, albeit on a guitar with humbuckers (I know, Jimi’s rolling over in his grave…)
It’s really cool listening to Bryce and Brian play their interpretations over it- not where I would’ve gone with it but that’s what is so great about this site, hearing everyone’s personal flavor.
Charjo- Incidentally, I also listened to your rendition of Peaches and Diesel after Hey Joe- that was absolutely fantastic! It was the Slowhand album that got me interested in playing guitar to begin with and you did this beautifully!

Very nice job, all the extra licks you threw in there sound really smooth. Well done!

Thanks for listening guys. @Mark O, I was floored by Brian’s lead not only because it was so cool but because it really complemented what I was playing. I wish I could take credit for the Peaches and Diesel version but I learned it from Brian on his YouTube channel.

Brian, I loved the way you echoed several of John’s phrases to begin your own. It fit so well. Also like the idea of this type of challenge and might take it up later if I get some time.
