CAGED system

I have been looking at the videos on the CAGED system. Am I right or wrong on this the minor and major penatonic related to the caged system by E shape is first pattern minor and second pattern major and so on and so forth?

It seems different people use different numbers for the patterns Leo. Except the minor Pentatonic…pattern 1 always seems to be the Em shape. It drove me a little crazy so I just use the CAGED shapes for the pattern names now.

Yes sir, you are understanding well. Just get used to identifying where the root notes are at any given place on the neck. That way you can always use the known formula’s for the scale to go forward or backward with the correct notes.

Example key of E:

from the E at the 2nd string 5th fret, I know immediately I’m working with the C or D shape.

I also know that playing the note two frets higher is the major 2nd, two more frets higher is the major 3rd note.
From that same root note going backwards three frets is the major 6th note. It should be clear that it is starting to form pattern #4 of major pentatonic scale for E.

To play minor from that very same note, move forward three frets up to the G note (b3).
Or go back two frets for the D note (b7). The A and B are part of the minor pentatonic as well on string one. That looks an awful lot like pattern #3 doesn’t it? So you see, just knowing the formula for major and minor pentatonic you can quickly identify the pattern you are in from anywhere on the neck.
