Hello AM family!
For this challenge, I met up with our friends Kevin, Manfred, and Werner at Kevin’s beautiful home in Bad Vilbel. We struggled mightily throughout the weekend. My biggest challenge was my acoustic guitar performance of “Hey Hey.”
The first struggle was finding a tempo that I could actually maintain for the whole song. As you’ll see, I lost that battle several times! Many thanks to Manfred and Werner for adjusting their background playing accordingly and somehow keeping things together.
If you look closely, you may notice my legs trembling. Unfortunately, that had nothing to do with keeping the beat — it was pure nervousness as soon as the camera started rolling. So that’s the second thing I’m still struggling with. I hope it gets better over time. My “red button syndrome” has definitely improved when I record alone at home, but put a few other guys in front of the camera with me and my nervousness increases accordingly!
The third thing I struggled with in this video was the fast runs — even though I’m playing them at about half Clapton’s speed. However, I only had one week to practise this song, so I won’t be too hard on myself for that one.

Just put some ankle weights on. 🙂 No, really, that’s not as bad as your hand shaking off the fretboard like mine does in front of an audience. It’s mainly due to not enough exposure to public playing. You played through it just fine.
This would have been a good song for that cigar box guitar that Werner has. It’s sounded really good though. You guys are lucky to have jam sessions like that.

And listening to this, I have to say, we didn’t do too badly at all, especially you.

Who doesn’t get stage fright when the record button lights up red? And it’s not easy to click with a new group right away, either.
In any case, the result is definitely worth a listen, it sounds great.
My trick for dealing with nervousness during a recording session is to play the song over and over again until I forget the recorder is even there—and then it usually works out.Dieter

You lot are so obviously having fun. It’s unfortunate that we sometimes lose sight of the fact that the main purpose of our music is to have fun. I hope you continue to play together and show us your videos – they’re quite uplifting.
Many of us suffer from the red light syndrome so I can identify with that particular struggle. -

That was really great! Too bad we members can’t get together more often, but planet Earth is pretty big. I was missing the sound of a drum beat. I have a Yamaha DTX Multi 12 drum pad, which is fairly small and compact, easy to travel with. But it needs an amp to plug into. So lots of drum-jammers just take a cajon drum, which needs no amp and sounds great. I’ve seen them used in the NPR Tiny Desk Concerts quite often.

Nice to see a video of you all getting together!
Yeah, it’s tough to take a solo with others much less record yourself doing it. I’ve definitely been there where it’s “what is the hunk of wood in my lap, and why are there strings on it?!?!”
You all sounded fine and more importantly looked like you are having fun!

That was awesome, Juxi! Your description does not match the outcome, I’ve watched the whole video and all I saw was a cool jam band enjoying the song and everyone sounded pretty good! The struggles were not only well disguised but also somewhat irrelevant as I’m sure playing together is not about perfection 🙂
By the way, does this jam band have a name yet?
