Since Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s version of Mean Ol’ Frisco caught the attention of some, thought I”d post this as a followup. Excellent album and I can see why its titled “Father of Rock & Roll”
Elvis Presley recorded several of Crudup’s songs and acknowledged Crudup’s importance to rock and roll when he said, “If I had any ambition, it was to be as good as Arthur Crudup”.
It’s really interesting to me when I find out the original recordings of songs made famous by Elvis or the Stones or Led Zeppelin. Stevie Ray had a great respect for those who came before him. Some of these guys got notoriety later in life but Arthur had to work as a laborer and even a bootlegger at times to make ends meet! He received almost no residuals for his songs.
