Hey my AM friends,
After hearing Brian’s challenge assignment, I started thinking about: can you really create a hook on purpose, or is it up to the audience to decide whether what they just heard is a hook?
Since I ultimately couldn’t come up with a definitive answer to that question, I tried to come up with a melody that seemed catchy to me.
I used a backing track sequence with the chord progression G Em C D.
Now it’s up to you, the listeners, to decide whether this could be a “hook.”By the way, this challenge entry marks my uninterrupted 5-year participation in the AM Challenge.
And I still haven’t had enough—I’m looking forward to your comments and, above all, to all your “hook” attempts.Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup will be July
There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum
I look forward to meet you.

Sounds like a nice hook for the intro of a smooth jazz instrumental. Next you need to bring in a tenor sax, then a keyboard.
So it’s a hook, to my ears.
Nice!

Nice one Manfred, it’s always worth remembering, you created and played that as a solo on guitar. Recording engineers and record producers could quickly turn your Hook into a very memorable piece.
Huge congratulation on your uninterrupted Challenge submissions, I’m humbled at just the thought of it.

The hook definitely has a lot of potential to go in multiple directions. It has a classic sound, that would fit right into a love song. But I know Manfred, that you will have the perfect result required for the next stage. Congrats, on 5 years of uninterrupted challenges (from someone that has managed only 2 years uninterrupted submissions), its a Gold Star achievement.

I think a melody that definitely follows the harmony of the chords can be a hook. Nicely done, Manfred.
Congrats and we haven’t had enough of your subs either.

Now that’s a question best debated in a bar fuelled by a couple of beers.
Maybe the listener decides, maybe they’re just caught 🤨.What I do think, is that a nice melody can serve as a hook and this is a really nice melody which has kept replaying in my head even though the video has finished. I think you’ve caught me 🎣🪝🙌
Many congrats on your 5 year streak too. That’s an amazing achievement.

That could definitely serve as a hook, Manfred – it had a nice and catchy sound to it, plus I liked the tone too. – Mark 👍🎶😎

I also think this catchy tune has everything it takes to be a “hook.” Great idea, Manfred. Und Dein 5-jähriges Jubiläum ist aller Bewunderung wert. Klasse!
Thank you, Werner

Hi Manfred , congrats on your five years continuous challenges a great achievement.
I think it’s both ,a usable hook and a catchy melody which could be used in lots of ways in that chord sequenceMartin

Hey Manfred, congratulations to your 5-year uninterrupted and very much cherished presence on AM!
Does your contribution qualify as a hook? Well, I’ve been listening very carefully to an endless number of songs over the past 4 weeks and I’m not even sure if every song has a hook. But yours is no worse than any other that I heard. Result of conclusion: Your little composition sounds very pleasant to my ears and that’s what counts! -

I’m hooked Manfred, captivating, melodic and soulful. I think it passes with flying colors-I can see this being ingrained in my psyche after a minute. Audience’s might determine what is a hook and what isn’t. However, I like the run you play-it’s everything a hook is described to be-noticeable and melodious! Great tone too!

A very enjoyable melody, definitely a hook, Manfred! And also a very nice short composition, something that could develop in a full song.
Congrats on your 5 consecutive years of challenges, what an achievement!

Nicely played Manfred, I dont know the answer to your question. I suspect there’s a big overlap between a melody and a hook but personally I do believe you can write a hook on purpose, but I also know for sure that many are the result of happy accidents – hence the benefit of noodling and experimenting, creating new ideas. Well played sir!

Very good Manfred….we all wonder about the exact understanding of the concept of hook…but every performance is highly appreciated as it is personal and subjective….Just like yours

Very beautiful melody that fits perfectly with the backing track; you use a very beautiful and warm crystal-clean sound. 👍

That’s definitely a hook, Manfred! I think once you use a melody motif twice – it’s a hook! 😅
Congratulations on the uninterrupted five years of submissions! If that does not require stamina and some serious determination then I don’t know what does! The time surely flies, the little Active Melody space we have here is so much richer with all your presence and contributions, Manfred! 👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨

60 continuous challenges – that’s amazing dedication! Very well done. I would call that a nice little melody rather than a hook but so what, it sounded good.

sounds hooky enough to me liked the organ in the background filling out the backing track
Good stuff
