It occurred to me that in rap and hip hop the bass line is often used as the hook. It also occurred to me that some of JJ Cale’s lyrics are quite rapable, or rapworthy. It also occurred to me that I need to knuckle down and practice my harmonica more., eat more protein, and spend more time in the gym.
During the rap verses you will hear a deep sustained kick drum note, which is known in the genre as an 808 kick. It took me an entire day just to figure out how to get that sound. It took me a half day to work out the best location and lighting for the rap. It took me another half day to get all my feet synchronized. All this, and the whole thing is only 2 minutes long…..

Steve, thanks for setting out the steps for how to complete a song using a ‘hook’ in advance. You have completed Part 1 and Part 2. Really enjoyed the creative layers and especially incorporating the harmonica, and of course adding the vocal rap and the feet . You are a fast achiever with great results.

A bass hook is a great idea. Well composed and played.
Thanks for all the work you put into this, it was very entertaining. It stood up to the high standard of Sunjamr creativity.

Another composition. Sounds great and extremely creative, but way over the top and over the 30 seconds making it more into a song.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

If there’s a more original cover of a J.J. Cale song, I’ve yet to hear it. That was such a lot of fun. The bass hook drew me in from the start with that rhythmic pulse and my feet were already tapping before the foot finale. So creative. You went the extra mile but it was worth it. 🙌

Love the humour in this performance, Steve – had me grinning from ear to ear 🤣🤣. Also an excellent groove and feel you had going there – wonderful stuff 👏👏 – Mark 👍🎶😎

More a hook collection, Steve. But it totally works. I think the first rap song I hear from you, and it was a blast!

Yep a hook medley, lots of creativity here , I think that bass is the driver though with the catchy groove .
I can hear the JJ Cale influence.

I would call that a super funky hook Steve. And good on ya mate for adding all the extra bits! Very enjoyable and entertaining.

Steve
I do like the idea of a bass hook… really well done. This was clever and fun… love your Strat tone…. goes so well with the bass but man love the clogging thing, the vocals/rap and of course the ‘Yeahs’ are signature. Great harp playing. Yeah!!
I would definitely hold on to this… It’s got a lot of potential….would be a great jam song to play in a bar for hours!!!I’m impressed-John

BTW, I forgot to mention that the hook is the first 12 bars of bass line, which lasts about 31 seconds. The follow up stuff was just keep me from getting bored. I didn’t want the the hooky bass line go to waste.

That’s a hoot Steve! At first I wasn’t sure but once it all came together that was a lot of fun. Great grooves and instrumentation.

Watch Brian say next “OK, for this months challenge, turn your hook into a song.” 🙂 That was a great bass line and definitely hooked us in.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Loved your funky rap Steve! An enjoyable and catchy song, for sure your bass line is addictive and definitely a hook! Not to mention the overall song production, harmonica, vocals and so long.

Steve, I don’t care about the remit this month – I enjoyed this so much whatever it was. You remind me, regularly, that this guitar lark is about having fun and being craetive. Being creative means being playful, conecting with that child within and giving him some room to express. Fantastic, great fun, entertaining and yes – hooky! Well played.

Nice one, Steve. I tried my hook idea on bass, too, and it would gave worked there, too. I’m not surprised that you got carrued away and made a full fledged music video production out of this challenge. I guess that will be our follow up challenge, but we’ĺl see.

Thank you very much for this one, Steve. Very creative take on the challenge. The hook feels original and your playing is clean and expressive.

You’re so right about the bass hook, Steve! So many great songs rely on their bass intros/hooks, I was tempted to try that myself. I laughed when you mentioned getting “all your feet” synchronized in the description but then I realized that yes, you did indeed have more than just two feet to sync, haha! 👣🤣👣🤣👣😅👣😂👣
What a creative and innovative production, loved every bit of it. I also second everything Gary W said about connecting with your inner child and having fun with music. You do exactly that and we, the audience, just love it!

The bass riff was all we asked for but there was no stopping Sunjamr! You squeezed a lot into 2 minutes. Took a while, as you say, but it was time very well spent.

you shame me with your excellent videos
The whole piece made me smile though you probably fulfilled the hook part with the bass alone 🙂
