I just ran across this fingerpicking blues guy on YouTube, and he has some good stuff. But he was completely unknown to me.

No, new one on me Steve, seems Paul Cowley is a man from the Black Country. I really enjoyed the blues number, very haunting and a great syncopated fingerstyle, thanks for the post.

I first heard him around a year or more back, I thought he was a Welshman so was surprised to read that he is from Brimingham in the English Midlands, I’m really impressed with his latest song, his album is now on my to buy list.

Birmingham, home of Black Sabbath & Davey Graham, Alvin Lee & Ten Years After were from Nottingham area. Seems like it was bit of a hot bed of talent in that area. I’ve read that this is commonly referred to as the North Country and took these folks a while to break into the scene in London. Black Sabbath was originally a blues based band called Earth – Alvin helped them get several gigs in London and told them it would be a terrible idea to change their name to Black Sabbath…. anyways, the rest is history
Good to hear another from that region sharing their talent

Really enjoyed this Steve. Another great talent that borrowed from the previous generation and made it his own. That’s what its all about

Very nice finger style! He makes it sound very similar to bass guitar. Instead of playing 4 bits on the bass strings, he plays only 3 and lives out the 4’th (I should try that, it requires some practicing). That’s an awesome example of less is more.
Then after some time he does the 4’th bit for a few bars, which makes it sounds more energetic, and then returns to 3 bits out of 4. Simply delightful.

Hi, Paul Cowley is living in France. He is actually playing at my local Speakeasy in Sunderland ( England ) later this month. Sadly, I am away on holiday so I will miss him. ( Free entry as well The Speakeasy at The Harbour View, Sunderland.

Never heard of it revered to as the north country, it may have fallen in to “the black country” area of England, Black country because of the soot and grime from the factories during the industrial revolution Keith, you are correct though with the bands/groups you mentioned, a very prolific music area.
