He is simply awesome and from my experience and in my opinion and knowledge know both subscriber based premium members having knowledge from combining material and theory using both sites would benefit.. Brian with his weekly incredibly gifted artistic compositions (More Material and some theory) Brian Kelly /Zombie guitar ( More specific detailed theory and less weekly artistic compositions ..
I am five years straight premium here and joined Brian Kelly’s zombie guitar for developing further my knowledge for music..
the simple fact is just like developing to communicate learning new words to express our thoughts, so it is with understanding music theory…
truth is only the only threat to me nowadays is being censored to communicate and share my knowledge.. I reflex the Bryce moderator days when either I was informed by Bryce that he removed my post or blocked/censored it for whatever TOS rules inside these quick link forums.. As for my time and my developing stage to both Brian’s premium subscription sites
I wish to continue to share what is fun to read and listen here on Active Melody.. Here is a great sample about the power of music theory explained so well and easy to understand. To not share is not to enjoy!
This is really a great one to share (all his stuff is awesome but this one really starts cooking almost 7 minutes into it.. you’ll see some cool eye openers as I did! enjoy ALL AND BOTH Brians LOL

Here’s the thing, if I want to learn how to repair my chainsaw, I look on Google or Youtube for tutorials. It’s the same with guitar. If I want learn some options for how to hold my pick, I look on Google or Youtube.
Most of us can’t sing very well, so we gravitate toward learning instrumental guitar songs. That eliminates 98% of the other online guitar instructors on Youtube, since they focus on teaching songs everyone knows. What good is it going to do me to be able to play the guitars solos from “Comfortably Numb” or “Stairway to Heaven” if neither I nor anyone I know can sing them? All the other online instructors have some useful things to share, and there’s nothing wrong with learning from them. I do that on an “as needed” basis, but the vast majority of good stuff I’ve learned has come from the AM lessons and the AM forum, and here I’ll stay.
What I found really useful and inspirational was the “Rut Busters” series where Justin Sandercoe sat down with The Captain from Anderton’s Music Store and delved into the question of why we reach a point where we fail to progress, and how to get past that. Other stuff I’ve delved into from other online instructors:
How to increase my picking speed
How to do slant picking
The Circle of 5ths concept
Using the CAGED system and chord voicings
Funk guitar rhythms and fills
Reggae guitar rhythm and fills
Memorizing major and minor scales all over the fretboard
Favorite licks from famous guitarists
How to do guitar vibrato
How to compose a melody
Fundamentals of learning jazz chords
(to list a few)Sunjamr Steve

Years ago when Brian was a small timer LOL I got to chat with him on skype and he got to know me a bit and I got to know him as someone that really was down to earth type of person, and as of today his fame has not gotten to his head, but maybe to his wallet. I would like to be his favorite guitar salesman at Guitar Center.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Again didn’t want to mention names but I too been here long enough to see how (like Google/Youtube) are doing business and using censorship protocol technology.. hell even China uses and abuses the free world with thier decietful business endeavors!

I mentioned to Bryce when he was moderating same thing for his honesty..( he just sizzled off here on his own accord I guess.. he use trumpet over my newest post entries (ignoring completely like a selfish little teenage moderator I thought he was after awhile.. anyway whoever , even if it breaks anybody’s little heart
I’m going to enjoy and have fun under the SCREEN NAME sunburst! Thanks Pete being upfront but not necessary to reply

Pete, it wasn’t like I didn’t respect moderator Bryce, I just looked upon him after awhile as a person who wanted to move forward here way too fast..

And than I can say more but it’s like it is and always will be Pete ..you know what I mean,, anyway brother, you keep practicing I sure the hell am here unless the powers that be say otherwise!

John,
Rather than be all rebellious, why don’t you ask Brian directly how he feels, these days, about promoting other websites in the forum. Brian is kind enough to provide and maintain the forum for our enjoyment and I tend to try not to promote other sites out of respect for him (I’m not perfect and have slipped up in the past). On the other hand, Brian has stated that he wanted to produce a music theory course and, understandably, given Brian’s creative output, this has never happened. I agree there are lots of great theory and technique based links that would be great to share, the one above included. It may be that Brian is now secure enough in his success, that he may not care what we share anymore.

John Charjo thanks man, with all due respect, I understand what you mean but, in the same way I interpreted Brian reminding us in the intro monthly challenge thread .. have fun sharing our progress ..this is the forum to discuss “Music theory” many sites have a knowledge music theory search directory to help beginners to advanced, advanced chord charts definitions etc. and it helps But as stated this is a fun site but sharing what’s not provided here in the way of theory and having it censored ( Bryce did this to me when he was cause he pm’d me as to why so if it were TOS terms whatever works I suppose is fine but.. Again, to move forward and see the big picture ..sharing a bit of theory as I stated under the title “Music Theory” should not be distracting anybody and not to be censored. Bryce was censoring much the last few months or whenever before he stepped down ..I remember Duffy use to post good stuff on theory and found it inspiring to read his posts..Anyway, it’s all good just saying I noticed a bit of censorship in that respect.
Still enjoy the site a lot and just started practicing the latest ragtime lesson 329 very cool composition and lot of takeaways too! I feel fortunite to learn so much on this site. But Sharing “music Theory” is good for everybody otherwise why we bother?

When Bryce started the Music Theory section of the forum (I know because he did it at my request), the idea was for members to teach members. Duffy posted his theory essays on chord substitutions and I posted a video on finding roots within the pentatonic shapes. At that time, Brian enthusiastically endorsed the idea of members teaching members but there was a general understanding that, again, out of respect for Brian developing his website, we wouldn’t promote other competing patreon or paid subscription websites. As I said above, given Brian’s remarkable success with Active Melody, he may feel completely different at this point but I think it would be decent of us to check with him.

I read you John,, I said it before too think it best I suppose he’s teaching it his way and doesn’t need the extra pressure extending theory from other sites here.. I can respect that too. okay hope no hard feelings, I’m off to the country for a last camper needs winterizing lol !

Opps….didn’t realize this was a controversial topic. For my two cents, if this were my site, I’d be very protective of it. Like has been said, there are tons of places to go on YouTube for Theory lessons.

It’s very easy to find theory resources on YouTube, or regular websites. Thus, I don’t see the need to post links to theory stuff, and because it’s so easy, I don’t see much harm in posting those links. I agree with Charjo that it should be Brian’s call.
I stopped with the general theory posts because I got busy with other things, but also because I had the feeling that I was being too abstract to be useful for most. For what I was doing, anyone could do much better by watching a bunch of Adam Neely videos.
What I think would be cool for this site would be to take some of Brian’s lessons, and show how he is using theory concepts. He rarely goes beyond pointing out that something comes from the major or minor pentatonic scale, and I don’t recall him ever discussing his chord progressions in any detail. And he has never gone into an in-depth melodic analysis that I can recall. (Actually, I cant even recall him saying something like “the line then moves to the third.” This is something I will have to think about. It would be easier to pick something if the challenge assignments were a specific lesson, like they used to be. Then, an analysis would surely draw a fair bit of interest.

Duffy,
I agree some discussion of the current lesson or challenge piece would make a great thread.
