I love the “no accompaniment” acoustic blues pieces. This is my attempt at EP213. Thnak you Brian.
I just got this Gretsch G9500 Jim Dandy guitar last week as a cheap every day player to take to my office to play at work, but I love it so much that I decided to keep it at home. They really made a great guitar. It’s surprisingly loud and gives you a really old school sound. I really recommend everybody by one. You can’t go wrong for 160 bucks. Anyway i hope you enjoy. I’m about to post EP214 as well. -

James, You played that very well and that new guitar sounds great and the tone was perfect for that lesson. You may have to buy one for the office too,

Off scale on the cool orometer!!! Are you a professional? So clean, yet so gritty! Loved that big G on the white background. Looks like you just blew in off the delta. Real feel, emotion, pizzazz, and skill in this.
Loved it!

James,
That was a professional performance and sounded fantastic. I have a Jim Dandy also, the Delta Skyburst, and love it but I can’t play like you so it doesn’t sound as good…..what strings are you using on it or are those the ones that came with it?

Hi Tim. Thanks! Still the original strings. I may put on martin retros when the time comes. Or just find out what gretsch put on it out of the factory.

That sounded great James, you played that with grit but also with feeling, just how acoustic blues should be played. I could listen to much more, thanks for the post.
Just out of interest, what have you used to record and edit the clip?

Thanks for that James, did you do anything extra to get the sound right? It sounds so good. Whenever I try and record using my iPad, on playback the sound always turns out very thin and tinny.

James,
I looked up the guitar strings for the Jim Dandy and they came out of the factory with D’Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze Lights .012-.053.
Attached is a review confirming the string guage.
All the best,
Tim

http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/gretsch-roots-collection-g9500-jim-dandy-flat-top-574844I have Martin 10’s on my Jim Dandy and the action lowered to suit, it is a little guitar with a big voice imho.

I put the info on the post I did when I bought the guitar Tim, with the measurements I took I decided that the bridge could afford a loss of 1mm.. ..IT IS ALL IN THIS THREAD..

Billy,
Ok, thanks. Forgot that you had done that. I put Ernie Ball 10’s on my Jim Dandy as the 12’s were a little heavy for me to finger easily. Still not sure if I have the best strings on it to suit me….

Great playing on a great guitar, delivered with a ton of emotion, doesn’t get much better James, well done on both lessons.

I love that aggressive style of playing. It takes very good dampening skill, which you obviously have. Very nicely done.

That was amazingly well played. I do not want you to think I’m saying this because you aced every single note and made zero mistakes.
What makes this stick out to my ears has primarily to do with how very skilled you are at controlling your attack. Your picking technique combined with those muting skills produces a very crisp sound that leads me to believe that you have play a fair amount of electric guitar before as well.
And ultimately what those skills combine into, for my ears at least, is such a sweet feeling of perfect timing.Well done indeed!

Wow Johan. Thank you so much for the kind words. I just got back home from selling my beautiful acoustic archtop guitar (i noticed i hadnt touched it in a while and wanted to make sure it went to someone who would play it) and i was feeling a little regret, but your message brightened my mood. I’m actually mainly an acoustic player. I very recently bought an american stratocaster professional and struggled because i have an aggressive picking hand form playing acoustic and i was causig fret buzz on the strat (even with a professional set up). It has definitely been an adjustment to play electric guitar for me. But I have some videos of me playing electric guitar too. Anyway thanks again for the kind words and take care.

Hope you can come to terms parting with that archtop! It’s always hard to part with an instrument even if it’s one that rarely gets played.
I’m confident that you could overcome any issues regarding aggressive picking playing the electric. It’s all about time spent practicing as you already know. Muting is key I would say for any “aggressive” acoustic player wanting to progress on the electric, and you have that skill already. The rest is just about how many hours you spend with each type of guitar. But like you I tend to play more acoustic than electric, so get what you mean.
I went from a picker to a fingerpicker over the course of a year joining AM. If you check my posts in this forum by clicking my username you’ll find an assortment of recordings both in video and audio form. From learning to drone that Delta-style thumb to travis-picking and also just regular playing with a pick.
But I want to end by again emphasizing how good I think your technique is regarding attack and mute. Well done!
Cheers!
