Picked this up tonight, its not been all that well looked after and has a few dunts and dings in the body, but I have been wanting a parlor guitar for the last 2 or so years and now I have one. It has hardly been played, infact the pickguard still had the polly coating on it. I took that off when I got the guitar home. I will give her a clean and a fresh set of strings…oh yeah, you’ll be wanting a picture of my Gretsch Jim Dandy..

Well that looks just dandy Billy, looks like a great fretboard.
I thought you were on the point of selling all your kit a couple of months ago! Oh how times change .. and so quickly.
Oh and secondhand still counts as NGD in my book.

Aye very true Martyn, I was all for packing it in and selling up, as you say how things can change, 6 months later and here I am with another guitar..

Congrats Billy. Enjoy your new parlor guitar! I am always picking up parlors when at a music store. One of these days maybe.

Billy — Congrats. I almost bought a Jim Dandy parlor and may still buy one some day. It has a very unique & cool vibe — it’s perfect for down & dirty acoustic blues. Enjoy!

Thanks Gents, so far I am finding few faults on the guitar. The main one is that the action is high at just over 3 mm at the 12th fret, I like 2.5/6 on the 12th fret of my acoustics But that is something to be looking at tomorrow after work, It is 23.25 here and close to tea and toast time..
So, wee jobs for tomorrow. measure the string gauge ( I think they could be 12’s) Take all the other measurements and then work out what i need to subtract from the bridge( and possibly nut) to get an action that i like..
I have noticed a few more chips/dings/dunts in the finish, it speaks volumes when something is like this. People not respecting what they have really annoys me to the bone....Billy..

Heavier strings and an open tuning would suit that little Gretsch just fine Billy.

Billy,
Congrats! I have a Gretsch Jim Dandy just like yours but the Delta blue Skyburst color. I don’t find the action too high but that’s just me I guess. I measured mine and it’s just under 3mm at the 12th fret. If you want to lower the action then I guess you would start with the white plastic bridge piece and shave that down. Well beyond my expertise. It’s a very easy guitar to play because of the size and has a woody/boxy down home sound to it.

Hey Billy, Congrats on an awesome new guitar. I wouldn’t let dings and dents bother me because it looks new to me. I am willing to bet that the blues are going to flow out of that one. It is good to see that I am not the only one that guitars follow home. Each one has their own sound which makes collecting and playing so much fun. I am with you on the string height at the 12th fret. I like a low action also if I can get it. Enjoy,

Congrats on the new rig Billy! Those are fun little guitars. I have played a couple in my recent travels.
And I agree that used guitars count as NGD.

Thanks everyone, been doing a bit of work on the “Dandy”, levelled off the neck and hydrated the fb. man this thing was well dry, two coatings of hydrate the wood soaked up and it might possibly take more.
Measured up the strings and they are indeed 12’s and I am thinking that these are the original factory fitted strings.
Action is way too high and the relief was way too deep, so adjusting the bridge height is a job for later today, this brings me to the question of the bridge saddle, it defo feels like bone to me and is listed as something called “compensated pps saddle”, from what I can gleam from tinternet pps stands for plastic steel..anyway, it needs lowering as I need the action down by about 1mm.
Thats about where I am, oh yeah, I ordered a gig bag for the guitar, I am thinking that I might just take this with me on the motorbike when I do rallies and do a bit of busking..
Anyone know how to strap a guitar to a motorbike?.. lool..Billy..
