Hi everyone – I had to opt out of the last 3 challenges due to a thumb injury (caused by excessive fingerstyle playing), but after 3 months of self-imposed physical therapy I’ve just about got it cured. Even so, I’m going to use a pick for a while longer, just to give my thumb a bit more rest. So the reason I chose EP354 is that it can easily be played with a pick.
February has some of the hottest days of the summer here in New Zealand. It was 32C when I recorded this, and the coolest place I could find was under some of my banana trees. So I balanced my Zoom H1 audio recorder on my leg and just played the lesson through several times. I used my Taylor GS Mini guitar, and I think the sound quality coming from the Zoom H1 is pretty decent. Luckily the sheep were on the other side of the hill, so they aren’t included in the audio.

Excellent multi-instrumental performance under the palm trees. That’s where you’d love to be and make music.

Hi Steve, really nice groove and mix on this one. Good steady tempo on the acoustic to hold it all down.
Hope the thumb heals up quickly. It looks like under the banana trees is the place to be. Hey, that’s a great name for a song; Under The Banana Trees, but Sunjamr. -

Looks to be the coolest place to play the blues Steve. Good choice of posting and well played to boot. That’s a versatile number, I remember posting it myself some while back.

This is one of my favorites to play in Drop D on acoustic, you did it justice Steve. Sounds great.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Phew 32 degrees!
It’s freezing cold here in Gatineau.
Nice rendition Steve with that GS mini, I have the same one.
I just posted playing it in the showcase.AndréM

Hi Steve, it was a good idea to put a golden ring around your picture. I think JoLa deserves one.

That was quite good Steve. As well as interesting, entertaining, and educational. Glad to hear your thumb is doing better.

You brought back to me very nice memories, Steve, this drop D song is on the first pieces I showcased here in AM some years ago!
And you played it brilliantly, and moreover adding the bass and your original melody over was just magic! Recorded beautifully as well.
Loved your rendition, and a bit of envy because I would like to have a garden like this (I live in a condo 😅!)

Well done Steve
Love the dark drone thing going on and you are pulling’ off some tasty chops. The tone is to die for, regardless of the heat and bananas, lol. I need to get me one of those Zoom H1 Audio devices. Hey, the simple slide and bass added so much-texture and layers. Fantastic. Ours were remarkable similar.John

Steve, nice job on this one. I seemed to recall somewhere in your (over 100) submissions, you have played this before. Sounds great and nice addition of bass and slide guitar. Good sound off that recorder too. Cheers. Pap

Thank you very much for this one, Steve. I do not know what I should admire most – your musical contribution or the surrounding for the video shooting. Both are extraordinary.

That’s a cool lesson, Steve. Way to spice it up with the bass and slide. Great recording with your zoom.

You really can’t complain about the heat while you live in such a wonderful place with Banana trees and a Taylor GS Mini in your hands!
That’s a very earthy and haunting Brian’s lesson. The addition of bass and slide are the cream on top.
Well done!
No it’s our turn for spring and summer! I can’t wait for warmer weather.More Blues!

Greetings, Sunjamr.
I know this piece well. I practice it all the time. It believe it was a previous Challenge.
You’ve done it again, Maestro!! Nailed the basic lesson (of course), then that bass and slide really added to it. I thought, was does he need bass, when it’s already played on the guitar in low E string. But that big bass really added to it. Then when the slide came in, that supped it up to the next level. Very cool!!
Enjoyed.

Ooh, I love that Drop D groove, and you did so well, Steve. Great idea how you looped it and added bass and then a slide … oh wait…. is that the very first time you played slide on video??? I remember you saying you thought about getting into it at one point. Well, you already did the best thing you could do on the slide, add some simple yet tasty slides to give it a more bluesy effect – and it all sounded just fantastic. Congrats on the gold frame – welcome to the Centurion Club 😉
Your video setting couldn’t be better, very much in the spirit of the New Zealand’s Summer ☀️☀️🌴☀️☀️ I guess your February is the equivalent of our August here in the desert so we have it coming, too 🙂

We chose the same EP! I like the addition of slide guitar, a little goes a long way. Glad to hear your thumb is getting better though you seem quite handy with a flatpick.

Ah this one brings back memories it’s a golden lesson you’ve chosen, love that drop d tuning , and the improv is endless with this style . I like the way you’ve layered in the bass and the slide playing.
The recording came through well with the zoom H1 .
Congrats on your 100 plus milestone a fine achievement.Martin

Very cool lesson, Steve, and you played it well. Sound was pretty good from the Zoom, H1, I envy that mobility.
Congrats on your Centurion status. Also, I want to acknowledge that I believe you were one of the earliest multi-instrumentalists on Active Melody.

Oh just the right amount of slide. What a blend you have. Love the scenery, but the heat might be too much for me.
