Happy New Year everyone.
I decided to post what I’ve been obsessed with all month. A lovely jazz standard with the lines inspired by a Jack Ruch Performance.
I did slip in a 4 note pattern in the intro & the ending jus so I was legal.:-)
It’s a lot to learn, but the more familiar I got with the chords underneath, the better I could keep track of which run went over which chord. So I started by practicing playing the chords which actually sound really beautiful by themselves so that was no chore.
Then I made the backing track in Garageband. Much to my delight I discovered they’ve added a couple of brush drum tracks so I was able to pick one & get that authentic lounge lizard sound.:-)
Hope you enjoy it.
Arohanui e te whanau.
It’s in the key of F major. Being a jazz song it’s basically AABA. I really love the B section, especially that last bit where it goes from the Eb7 down to the C7.

Yes absolutely! I was thinking it’d be nice to have a female vocal for this. I love Ella’s version the best.
How do we do this? Do I send you the audio?

A wonderful performance. I just love that ‘lounge lizard sound – this is the kind of thing I like to listen to when I just want to chill out in the morning with my coffee. I really enjoy jazz but I have never really understood how the chord progressions work and you certainly had that to perfection here. Impressed that you can play to the chord changes so well.

Late night/Early morning, smokey Jazz club, just the last dregs of tired customers and the Barman saying, “Final call for alcohol” – oh yeah, loved the feel of this one, Cloughie 👍🎶😎

This is so cool, Cloughie. I want to grab a scotch, sit down at a bar and listen to you hours and hours. Your playing is so smooth and tasteful. You play no chords at all, but you can hear them all out. Nevertheless, thank you for writing them down for us. This was great!

Brian, you took me back to 1987 my friend! I was working at a Jazz restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA called The Lounge. (Between college and dental school to pay for dental school – LOL). And great jazz acts would come in for dinner and play a set! I got to see George Benson and Stanley Jordan play as I was serving yummy food to the peeps! Great use of the 4 note scale pattern in you amazing jazz playing! Well done! Bob

The smoothest, softest, the most lovely sound, Brian!
You have really taken up a few notches with your playing lately! The lounge lizard percussion was there just in time to support this incredibly well done project, so soothing and sweet! Just a perfect platform for some 4-note scale patterns and you sure took advantage of that! Some of them were so fast I tried not to blink! 😉
Man, you should be proud! This is top shelf music, played beautifully! 🎶🎶🎸JoLa

Nice one Brian, love that chord sequence, not boring at all. That really is proper lounge lizard stuff, a real crowd pleaser. And you’ve managed to get a nice jazzy sound out of your Tele, something I’ve never been able to achieve.

This was so tasteful. I’ve played that song once or twice, but never studied it to have it at the level you seem to have gotten it. Might need to add it to my rotation. Really nice chord outlining and tone.

Hi Cloughie, I love “The Nearness of You” and I recall hearing Jack Ruch play it a while ago. You did a great job with it. Nice tone and feel, and worked around the melody nicely. Some really nice improv over those chords. I really enjoyed listening.
