As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been delving into St James Infirmary Blues, on a deep dive quest to learn how to play it properly according to the original version. I always thought the song was created by African Americans in the early 1900s, since the words seem to point in that direction. And maybe one of the most famous early versions was by a black singer called Cab Calloway.

But now I have learned something that came as a big surprise: The song actually comes from the 1700s in England, and St James Infirmary was a leper hospital. Here’s a guy that claims to play it closer to the original version:

Who knew??? Certainly not me. But now I am enlightened, and so are you.

We will probably never know exactly where that song really comes from. The fact that it is in a minor key, and its (likely) harmonic structure, give some credit to the English origin, me think. But it’s highly speculative.
The one thing that I know is that my favorite version is Louis Armstrong’s 1928 version.

Yes, I’m with you on that. Louis Armstrong’s voice just matches the song perfectly.

I can’t contribute to your search for a guitar rendition but I just wanted to say that I LOVE this cover by Hugh Laurie, especially for its superb introduction which I must have heard thousands of times and still makes my hair stand on end!!!
I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do

Hi Helen – I was hoping the forest fires in Greece didn’t affect you. Glad to see you’re still alive and well. Yes, the version by Huge Laurie is awesome. He’s a great piano player. In his famous TV series “House, M.D.” he sometimes played his piano a bit.
