It is with great sadness that I share the news of Gary’s passing. Purely, an original talent. More later. Still taking this in. When asked, “Who was your favorite player?” He always came to mind. Think of his slide in Free Bird, he co-wrote the intro to Sweet Home Alabama and wrote the chops for Gimmee Three Steps. Rest in peace. Now he lay in rest with the rest of the Skynyrd crew in Rock and Roll Heaven.
RIP Gary. Those songs are some of classic/southern rock’s best. I remember the local LA radio station that had a contest way back to have listeners call in to vote on Free Bird or Stairway to Heaven as best classic rock song ever. The Jam band in Rock n Roll Heaven just got another great guitar player.

Great Player
R.I.P.
I spent about 4 months learning a lot of Gary’s parts for a Skynyrd tribute band. While most of their songs were made up of 3 or 4 chords, the guitar parts were something different. There was a lot of finger gymnastics going on learning some of those riffs. RIP Gary and much respect.
