hello cool cats
i’m in the market for an amp that i can take out for some busking and guerrilla gigging around town. i do fingerstyle guitar pretty exclusively, and love open mics for playing pieces, but those opportunities don’t really offer time for noodling around. i’d love to go to my riverwalk area, and try some stuff i’ve learned hereat AM in between songs.
i obviously don’t want to play super loud, but would like to be heard. i play only acoustic, and per above fingerstyle covers of songs. it’s about as low-ley as it gets.
i had my eye on that link i put below. 40watts would might be enough? that model below also has 20w, 40w, 80 and 100w models. it’s just one channel in, no singing. i’m also not really a gearhead and anything technical will likely sail clear over my head. i like that this guy is battery-powered along with a plug-in option. that would really open up my “show up and play where ever” options. i got about $200 to spend on something.
thanks cool cats!

Hi,
This is an edit to my original answer which you’ll find below.
In my enthusiasm in promoting the Schertler amps (to whom I have no affiliation whatsoever) I forgot your actual requirements! Sorry about that 🙁The Schertler amps are outstanding, but:
– they do need a decent power supply and I don’t think batteries will do; so busking will be a problem
– they won’t fit in your budget at allThe remark about the power remains, though.
Good luck!
ORIGINAL ANSWER
First, let’s be clear: you need at least 100 or even 150 W!
Believe me, when you’re in a loud bar and people are drinking, talking, laughing and having a good time, your 40 W amp will be totally insufficient.I also play acoustic only, but not always alone. I personally own an SR Technology amp; they are now part of the Swiss company Schertler. In fact, before being acquired, SR Technology and Schertler were already in joint venture; Schertler were manufacturing the preamps and SR Technology made the amp and cabinet.
I have played with many different amplifiers, including the famous brands, and none ever beat mine. It’s as simple as that. Granted, they are pricy, but well worth it.
Schertler is huge in Europe. Probably less so in the US, but they have several distributors. Do check them out!

hey jm, thanks for the reply. schertler looks VERY nice, but just too pricey for me. i recently dropped about 1k US on a martin guitar and that’s my bi-yearly expensive buy. i will keep your wattage requirements in mind tho and shoot for something >100watts. hope you’re well :v

The Yamaha THR3011A would seem to fit your ideas. They are extremely powerful for their size but not as per Jean Michael’s ideas. They are me well above your pice range However they are to be found on the secondhand market. I and many at AM have the THR10c a smaller blues version as a home practice amp and love them for their features. I think it would be good advice to head to your local stockist and check one out. My guess is that it will blow you away and maybe you would want to look out for one at your price or stretch the budget!

The first one here is one I bought from Sweetwater a few months ago.
Battary power OR AC adapter if you choose. It’s smaller than the last loaf of bread I baked! But it has a good sound for practicing or small spaces – just to share the music. The price point is well within your budget. Under $100 for the amp, and if you like you purchase the AC adaptor seperately – $17 to $40.The second link below is the “bigger brother” which is only slightly above your price point and perhaps do-able for the bigger sound. I’ve found Sweetwater to be great to deal with over the last 6-7 years.
Good luck,

Have a look at the ‘Fender Acoustic Junior GO’, it is 100w, has a battery, Bluetooth and a looper, which might be useful to you busking. However it’s a tad over your stated budget.
Like most amps today, they do appear to be in short supply, certainly here in the UK. My order won’t be fulfilled from Anderton’s until mid March ‘23Richard
