This months challenge left a lot of room to do anything we wanted, so I decided to use something I was already working on, which was my own arrangement of Dock Boggs Country Blues. This is classic old blues that’s been covered by many, most notably by Doc Watson and Kelly Joe Phelps. It’s the KJP version that influenced me the most, but I can’t do what he can do, so I did my own thing.
I started out thinking I was going to do this on electric, and have been practicing with a strat, but once it came time to record, I decided I liked it better on my old Gibson archtop which is tuned to Open E, of course. 🙂

This was the right choice, to take the Gibson Archtop for this. It sounds awesome. And you make her sound awesome. I enjoyed your slide playing.

Yes, the possibilities are endless. Your choice was cool. Sensitive and moving. Well done.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Very cool, Bret. Great tone from your Gibson and the sporadic use of the slide spiced this blues up very nicely. Your tune fitted the backing track, but would have sounded just as well without it. Very well, done!! 👍🏽👍🏽

Another interesting take on this universal backing track , I think your the first to break out a bit of country blues , nice old arch top sounds so mellow especially with slide.

Awesome, Brett. The sound you were getting out of your guitar was fantastic. That’s some deep down blues for sure. And your playing with all those picks and slide was just great. (Loved that groove at 1:25-1:45)

Love that bluesy fingerstyle song with that drone bass😃. I don’t know the song, but like it a lot.
Your slide playing and fingerpicking sounds great.

This is also an interesting idea to fit a classic blues on the backing track, and it worked really well, well done Bret!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.

You’ve got style which enables you to “do your own thing”. It’s cool to see you play using the thumb and finger picks and using a slide … you’re got the equipment and you know what to do with it to get great sound. I loved you first very subtle introduction of the slide. Beautiful piece.
Cheers, Tom

The classic Bret! Love your fingerpicking/slide style and I think this old Gibson is absolutely perfect for that kind of playing. I’m not familiar with the song but I do like your arrangement 🙂

Sounded really cool Bret. A real country blues and ‘Yes’ you’ve got the fingerpicking going, the blues licks and slide. Very enjoyable. Keep on pickin’ and all the best! 🥸🎸🥸
