One of my favorite lessons of the past few years (not here) – this is Arthur Smith’s Guitar Boogie, written in 1945(!) and performed countless times since. This take is called the Vegas Boogie, and that’s the lesson I studied.
I recorded it at only 90% of original – this is a Boogie after all – and I was sweating for a while. Pretty quick, so there’s some clinkers. You can see near the end I looked at the track and realized we were almost through – finally let a smile break out. This really is fun to play.
We took the Tele back to the fifties – imagine an original Broadcaster. It was mic’d about 5 feet away, totally by accident, I just forgot about it in setting up the video. So you get a big room echo, sort of like a garage, or even better, a shot and a beer saloon where you’re playing for tips. I didn’t re-take cause it sounded like a place I’d like to be. Any Pittsburgh guys aut there?
The Vegas Boogie – here ya go . . .

Nice to hear you got it. There is a “Boogie Real Slow,” but this ain’t it!
Thanks!

Wow! See those fingers fly! Great stuff Bruce. Thanks for another rockin’ good time. Speed you got, speed I ain’t! I appreciate your playing.

Thanks, Garry –
You can see a couple spots in there where the mind was going faster than the fingers. Starting to get into rockabilly territory. Big fun.

Jeez Bruce, you’re a music anthologist, as well an extremely accomplished guitarist. I’d have to give you an A+ for that rendition.

Hi Steve,
I grew up listening to what my two older brothers listened to – rhythm and blues, doo wop, EARLY Ray Charles (highly recommended esp the instrumentals), Chuck Berry before the ‘respectable’ stations would play him. Plus I hung out with the neighborhood guys who collected old records, 45’s and 78’s. That was our second favorite topic as teenagers. But Arthur Smith was even before our time. I’ve still got some of Chuck’s 45’s here (nothing to play them on though). As for the rendition, thanks for the props. That stuff is played fast. Hard to keep up at 90%, but when I heard this I had to try to learn it. Took months.
Thanks,

Hi Denise,
Thanks for the props. The boogie woogie kind of takes over once you get into it. Tough to keep up with, but fun to play!

Bruce,
Really takes me back in time – good old days listening to a live band and inevitably someone would play guitar boogie. Loved it then and love it now. Great job.

You make it look so easy to play. You giving free lessons? My tele is just sitting here dreaming to have someone (me ) play your tune. 🙂
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Hi Pete,
Thanks for that. Parts of it flow real well, but still a lot of stumbles.
You want to learn this?
Check out mytwangyguitar.com , this lesson is called the ‘Vegas Boogie’ for 15 bucks.
He breaks it down into 18 sections and teaches first at full speed, then slower and slower down to about 50%, and includes a really good backing track. Very easy to follow, repeats each section at different speeds, slowly. I use the VLC media player and just loop sections until I get it, but he does that himself within the lessons also. In about a month you should have a pretty good take on it.
He’s a good teacher, his thing is not to talk but to teach by showing you, walk you thru the licks with good closeup camera work in bite size chunks. This tune is your basic boogie in E like EP091, same places on the neck.
That’s my second favorite guitar teaching site after Brian. I have about 15 of his lessons. Was just working on one tonight, a T Bone Walker, to put up on the forum.
By the way, it’s called mytwangyguitar because his lessons are almost all done on Tele and Gretsch.
Thanks for the props, Pete. Check out the site, he’s got free samples of everything.

Well well Bruce… how absolutely great this is! Quite a tune to play (and remember!) and you did it in such a convincing way. And your skillful hands turnt out a perfect sound out of that Tele.
High class!

Thanks Andre,
Tone is funny. Some days you have to hunt for it, some days it’s just there. This day it just showed up.
Glad you liked it.

Thanks, Tom.. i just looked at some of your posts – I was going to comment on how good your productions are, as in, you should do this for a living. But hey, you did.
Great stuff, and I guess it takes you about the same amount of time to put all of those layers together as it takes me to do a 4 minute play-into-the-camera video. The learning curve on this stuff kills me.
Glad you liked the boogie.
