Hi, I’m new here and started yesterday with this nice slow blues lesson.
My Question: At Bar 3 it seems to me, the thumb on string 1 comes on the “and” after the slap on the second beat (if I count it out) and not on the third.
This freaks me out, because I thought the thumb is coming on 1st and 3rd?
Or am I wrong?
Sorry for the bad english, its not my native language.Robert

Hi Robert I’ve had a look at the tab and listened to the lesson a couple of times and your not wrong.
Looking at the tab overall there’s a freestyle to it as Brian is blending in a melody so your getting accents.
I’ve done solo electric lessons where he’s done something similar while it feels a bit daunting at first my method is to slow it right down get the pattern and feel correct bar by bar and go for accuracy over speed.
As you get the melody in your head the fingers slowly follow.
Personally had no end of trouble with his damping strokes at times you are certainly not alone

Hi snakechisler,
thanks a lot for your help!
The slaps are not my problem. But in all the fingerstyle arrangements I’ve learned so far there is the thumb steady on the beat and I was a bit confused, because here it seems sometimes offbeat. My thumb don’t want to do that 😉 -

Robert,
You’re right about the thumb steady on the beat thing. However, sometimes it’s ok to alter it a little bit to help the melody. Brian sometimes mentions that that’s something a drummer would do once in while, add an extra beat or add a “hiccup” beat to make it more interesting.
It was a good observation on your part but Brian makes it work. Just like Greg mentioned above, once you get the technique and melody in your head, the fingers and thumb will just follow.

Hi JoLa,
thank you, this is really helpful to know! I consider myself still as a beginner at guitar and sometimes I’m feeling a bit insecure and it just feels better to know stuff instead just having an idea.
Now it already works fine, I’ve had to forced my thumb a bit, but it’s as always just a matter of practice.
