I tried this decades ago never had the skill even the tab didn’t help me get the plucking thing going,, this isn’t no way beginner tune but it it certainly unique finger style (drop the high and low sting to D) the rest is all a fun game! hope it inspires to learn and practice here at Active Melody and eventually learn enough to key in on finally playing cover tunes you always wanted to play too.
this is my ole D 35 Martin and 13 elixir

Really enjoyed that one John, you showed some nice delicate fingerstyle on that Martin of yours. I’m not so familiar with Eric Johnson but those acoustic ethereal melodies remind me of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch.

Eric Johnson? More than cool. I do not know how many videos I have seen of him. I am always impressed. Great played my friend, as always! I also think the key is pretty cool. Everything sounded very pleasant!
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Thanks everyone, we all have a dim beam of light spectrum from the past lol.. Richard, I had to look up those fine guitar heroes you introduced here for first time,,I didn’t know either the guitarists you mentioned but searched a few youtube last was a Renbourn and Grossman too who I learned on youtube some delta blues fingerstyle turn arounds, man time flies! ..ahh but to each of us.. we all reflect back to our memories as in the old 70s Al Stewart song “time passages” lol ..yeah man, I think I have to say Active Melody lessons are helping my humble approach to some of the difficult cover tunes I still attempt to play ..but any approach, is for fun and enjoyment, I make it a fun game and a personal challenge. If I don’t learn it or get exhausted trying, I save the rest for another day/decade lol.. (just keep it interesting not too challenging otherwise no fun means what some are saying here on the forums, finding it too frustrating loosing interest ,putting the guitar away is okay but it is good to enjoy even simple melodic easy open chord tunes too.. below is when I was camping.. made a simple tune up..off one of Brian’s lessons ..like a Willie Nelson johnny cash style acoustic .. many takeaways from Brian’s weekly lessons many of the classics and the basics help me build a more solid foundation and from there it all connects on auto play .. next Eric Johnson tune I want to learn is (Steve’s Boogie) again , some unique riffs and licks picking up on this Eric Johnson.. as for Cliffs of Dover.. I don’t think I want to try that for sometime Wilfried lol.. thanks again enjoy.. Brian has tons of good fuel for the wood pile!

Glad you had time to spend with your guitar, what with all the fishing etc. That double drop-D tuning sounds like a good one for just sitting around and trying some improv.

Actually mornings were quite chilly near 39 low 40s wet damp.. i started out around noon every day for a week,,morning was fun making big breakfast coffee and messing around.. Tmobile service drops off ..hoping next time the t service is better signal.. think at&t is the ticket up by me..anyway.. i did/do make up some improvisations when taking the time in drop tunings.. I like experimenting.. in different drop/open tunings.. but not as much as i should.. i use to get into dadgad but there are several other tunings i’ve experienced.. anyway you mentioned it so this is one incomplete but you get the idea.. this is same double drop D..(drop both E strings to D)
don’t mind my socks..i keep the sweets tucked for the waders lol,, plus the dew on the lawn.. anyway fishing is a bonus up there is just nice rolling Catskill mts.

Hi some great picking there John I hadn’t heard Eric Johnson play and liked your rendition.
Maybe Brian will do something in double drop D sometime

Odin, only if he wants to , we should respect any and every lesson Brian composes weekly.. I am mainly learning from Brian’s take-aways for a lot of cool stuff I never use to get close to playing right.. but it is only recent I feel most confident cause after a few years devoting more time than ever,,somethings start to click in place..like having a better ear generally for figuring out licks and even the timing between notes etc. anyway, I have to finish another Eric Johnson tune I always wanted to play but never could..i’m pretty sure I will have it close enough, certainly better than I ever did in the past!
Thanks Larry, I feel the next Eric Johnson will be cool treat here..about half way through but still developing these altogether unique licks and will be demonstrating my hybrid picking ..I will try positioning my phone3 video camera so everything shows better too with my showcases.. thanks everybody and keep practicing make it enjoyable, never try rushing through any these lessons!

Wow, that is some really nice picking John. All videos sound great, but there is a distinct tone about the Martin that I like. As a developing guitar player, I need to work much more on my fingerpicking skills. I am more motivated now.

Forgive me if I just repeat what others say but this is really exceptional my friend. Impeccable fingerpicking… in step, great timing and your tone is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks much my active melody friends! I just enjoy learning and sharing here even if I happen to go off on my own little “guitar journeys” into a few cover tunes … but always excited about the lessons here too at Brian’s site! thank you and glad my sharing inspires all! Great bunch of members here these days, I’ve seen many come and go but the music and peace will always be shared here on my end with Active Melody!.. working on another cool Eric Johnson tune..will take few more days between work day I practice a bit a time!
