Surf Guitar Lesson (Dick Dale meets The Ventures) – EP107

Description

In this guitar lesson, learn how to play a simple surf style lead and rhythm. This lesson has some licks from the great Dick Dale and some licks from The Ventures. This lesson is also a great exercise for those that are interested in improving your picking technique and speed with your right hand. I’ve also included two versions of the MP3 jam track (one at a slower tempo) to practice with.

Neat !!! Just reviewed EP107. For years I’ve been using the A, D, E Minor Blues Scales and the Minor Pentatonic Scales for Surf, Misirlou, Pipeline, Etc…with no clue about using the Natural Minor Scales. First learned those songs from song books, long before Computers, while working at a Bush Station in Alaska; wasn’t motivated to learn scales back then. Certainly appreciate all of your courses.

Brian, thanks for the fun surf lesson.  Really enjoying it!  Perfect timing as I am relaxing in Hawaii, and playing my Traveler EG-2.  I think the first song I learned to play was “Wipe Out” so this one will add to the mix.

Really enjoy your lessons!  Thanks for your hard work!

I grew up listening to surf music so I am really enjoying this lesson. The timing was perfect since I got side tracked last week trying to learn some ole Shadow melodies like Sleepwalk without a lot of success.

Great work Brian! I’ve really enjoyed your lessons and approach to teaching. I think the inclusion of both rhythm and lead tab is stellar!! It allows me to loop my own backing track on the fly at home and just lends a fuller understanding of the composition as a whole.

Good stuff Brian I always enjoy each and every lesson you put out!  I looked over all your excellent videos and you have covered most of the types of music out there, I would like for you to do a couple of chicken picking lessons when you get time.

    Thanks in advance!

Am trying to play the Premium Member videos on my iPad but they won’t work.  Am using the standard Safari browser.  Any suggestions?

    Tom1951,

I use my iPad to play the videos with no problem.  You might just need to run the “update settings” feature to get the latest browser.

    Hope that helps.

Glad you put in a Surf lesson Brian.  I’ve seen the Ventures many times. Never have been lucky enought to see Dick Dale but he has a special tone.

I’m going to have to quit my day job so I have time to practice all of Brian’s cool lessons!
