(Part 1) Muddy Waters Style Blues Guitar Lesson – Solo Composition – EP213

Description

In this week’s guitar lesson, I’ll show you how to play a Muddy Waters inspired blues composition that’s played solo guitar (meaning no accompaniment). This composition is made up of several classic Muddy Waters licks. Muddy always played with a slide and even though I’m not using a slide for this, I’ll show you how to simulate his slide technique while playing everything in standard tuning. This works well on acoustic or electric guitar.

This is great Brian. Like how you translated the slide part to something we could do in standard tuning with no slide. Also loved the embellishments you put on the classic Elmore James riff. Count me as one of the folks that appreciate that you show us how to do this with a pick.

I like this type of playing and understand why most of it is in the key of E. I would like to see something like this in either the key of G or A. I think it would greatly improve my understanding of the guitar. Thanks.

Another absolutely fantastic blues lesson! Brian, your site is pure gold! I can’t thank you enough for bringing all this wonderful music to me in a way I can actually tackle it I’m 58 years old and have loved blues since seeing BB when I was 12 years old. I picked up guitar a few years ago late in life but have never made as much progress as I have in the past few months since joining AM. I play every day now as I work through your inspiring lessons! Thank you, Cary

Hi all, first of all another brilliant lesson Brian. Active Melody has been unbelievable find for me over the last couple of years 🙂

Just trying to gauge my progress and i know it is hard to compare but wondering how long it takes people to really get this and other similar tunes down, smooth and in time? I seem to be able to learn them quickly, 20mins or so but takes weeks there after to get it smooth.

What are other peoples experiences? I have been playing 3 – 4 years now.

    Thanks
    Rays

Depends on how much time you have to put into it. Typically takes me about 3 days to get something down. This one took me a week to play in timing. But that’s because I have a lot of time to put into it. I’m a slow learner. Been playing acoustic blues for about 3 years. Never could not learn something. I thought I could never be on the level I am now. But that’s mostly because of B’s teaching. Not just a great guitar player. But also excellent teacher. It’s all him and not me when I say I thought I’d never be at this level I am now. Very happy with him.

Your new policy of reworking the micro lessons is a good one. It’s inspired me to revisit them on my own. I find many examples of applied guitar-playing concepts among them. Things I can create drills and warm-ups from. If you haven’t yet done Hank Garland’s Sugarfoot Rag ditty, I’d like to see that along with some rhythm variations. Thanks.
