Jazz Up Your Chords Guitar Lesson – EP063

Description

Back in the late 90s, I was in a guitar store in Memphis and heard someone playing this jazzy chord progression. I had him show it to me and I still remember it and now I can share it with all of you, it’s somewhere between blues and jazz. Be sure to download the MP3 jam track to practice with!

Brian, I am confused. Why isn’t the F# maj 7 the same shape as the Emaj7? The F#maj7 has an A in it, which is not in that chord, is it?

        I agree…I’m pretty sure it is an F#min7, NOT F#maj7. It has a dominant 7 (flatted 7) and the A is a flat 3rd. Major 7 has a major 3rd and Major 7th.

Make your F# minor chord, then lift you pinky to get the flat 7. When you put your pinky on the 1st string 12th fret, that is just an octave up from the flat 7 at the 9th fret G string ( which is an E).

Really enjoyed this. Chilling in the back garden with a beer.  The neighbours said they liked this better than last week’s, which they thought was a bit noisy

Great little lesson!! Always like to add in a wee bit of jazz to my blues playing.
Noticed your cool Antone’s shirt and if by chance your’re not in Austin they made the news this week. Looks likely that they may reopen !! A lot of us old Austin blues players have grown up there from the beginning. Keep some of those cool jazzy riffs coming !  Al

Thanks Brian, trying to understand chords as I work through your lessons. Had been going bonkers trying to figure out why in bar 9 that was a Bb dim chord. Finally decided it would be an F#7 chord if that last note was added on the high E string - the F# note. Without that it would be a Bb dim? Anyway, got tired trying to count scales on my fingers.  Very good lesson, thanks.

    Hee Hee!  good answer Brian.
Never mind the sartorial elegance - the lessons are great, and that’s what counts!
btw, I’ve been recommending you to my friends, and I know that at least three (possibly four) have subscribed to Premier membership - and one of those didn’t even own a guitar at the time.

I’m loving the variety of the lessons you are sharing.  I’m also glad that I am on vacation this coming week while my wife and daughter are at work and school.  Nothing to do all day but work on my Active Melody lessons, unless it stops raining in East TN long enough to mow the yard.

Thanks Brian, very nice. A couple of questions - as per previous post, is not the 3rd bar F#m7?  And last chord in part 1 (8th bar), is it not an E6 rather than Emaj7?  Peter.

I am exercising a lot and the song develops - a friend put a nice base line to the song (my wife plays the base in our band) - the job for the drums and the 2nd guitar is not ready yet - looks like that we will have a smooth song for your x-mas gig. When ready Ill send you a mp3 file.

like you and your way to teach - very different to the european mindset

    thanks Gerd from Austria

Hi Brian. I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed learning this set of Jazz Cords.I had never ever considered playing a jazzy sound , but this cord progression really captivated my imagination, so over the past 5 or 6 wks I have been plodding away at learning the whole piece. I think I can now safely say I have mastered it now. Maybe a little more polishing is needed though, but it really sounds good to me. Thanks for introducing me to this style of playing. You are doing a great Job ,Brian. My playing has improved tenfold since becoming a premium member. So very many thanks to you .Cheers .Countryman

Hi Brian this is a great lesson for me thanks. I think the tab is slightly adrift aside from the chords mentioned the minor and the e6 you don’t seem to play the 432 at the 15th bar. A really nice sound when you play it! but I am improving thanks to your fantastic inspiration.

One of the great things I love about the Active Melody site is that your just one quick search away from discovering something new or rediscovering something forgotten,
Felt like a quick dabble with something different from the other lessons I’m working on and a Jazz search led me to this little gem.
The more I hear your jazz oriented lessons the more it makes me want to try it myself and bring it into my playing elsewhere. Not something I thought I’d be capable of before joining Active Melody.
Lovely progression and well taught as always,

About the E9 chord you teach here, instead of using the baby finger to cover the top two strings is it wrong to use the third finger to cover the top three strings instead. I’ve always played 9th chords without the baby finger. I really enjoy your lessons, Brian. Keep ’em coming!

Not wrong at all – I think Stevie Ray Vaughan made the 9 chord the way you’re describing

Just bought myself a Gibson Les Paul Studio and went back to EP063 and loved the accumulation of the chord sequence Brian, the guitar really goes with this style of jazzy blues!
Thanks a million for this one, simple but oh so effective!

I can only imagine what it would take to correct the 3rd measure chord to an F#m7, and I don’t suggest it. Of all the hundreds of lessons, a few things will creep in, but stuff like this does not confuse most players. Great lesson, as usual.

This is an old lesson but I’ve only been here a month or so thank you for making so many great lessons and not charging an arm and a leg for it. 🙂
