In this week’s guitar lesson you’ll learn an acoustic ragtime blues that you can play by yourself (no jam track needed). I’ll also explain the chord structure (where it comes from).

love how the chords tell the story! i learn so much from these ragtime blues lessons.
Another beauty that I can’t wait to learn! Thanks Brian
Another great one! – Thanks Brian!
Very nice lesson! Will work on this now.
I can’t wait to learn this one! Very nice arrangement.
Nice stand alone back porch arangement.
Fantabulous arrangement. First impressions were Tennessee Waltz, then Grisman’s Dawg’s Waltz. Then you took the chord melody into new areas that are right in my wheelhouse. I love 3/4 time and this is so great for me.
The augmented chord I call a sharp 5 so I remember what note to raise. The 13th I’ve been playing ever since my Hoagy Carmichael phase, which has never really ended actually. Also occurs in Maria Elena by Los Indios and Ry Cooder’s cover. So cool that you found those elements of Little Wing and the Beatles in the melody.
Bravo Maestro, that’s two outstanding lessons in a row.
Can’t wait to get stuck into this one. Another fine arrangement.
Great lesson Brian, Sounds a lot like Abilene on front end. always wanted to learn this style . Like the way you walk the bass line in particular. Dave
Looks just like my D-18
Wow Brian
Great timing – I bought a Martin 000-18 this week and cannot wait to practice this composition on it.
Nice one, Brian. Should be fun to learn, which I will do immediately 😊👍🏽
Another clever composition, has such a great feel to it. Just Great!
These are my favorite lessons from Brian! Thank you!
You’ve done it again, Brian … this was a ‘pip’ …. a ripping good lesson!
Very nice. The G chord to B to C reminds me of Sitting on The Dock of The Bay by Otis Redding. Nothing finer! I’m looking forward to tackling this one
I thought exactly the same Ian🙂
same!
Couldn’t agree more. This lesson offers some good ideas to sneak into Dock of the Bay hopefully without disrespecting Otis!
Really nice lesson Brian with the bass line driving the chords. Repetition of the different chord shapes is important for me to get them into my head and become more automatic. Fun to play and learn!
Way2cool lesson! BTW, I understand you’re in Middle TN. I’m close by in Jackson, TN. Do you do any gigging in or around middle or west TN? Love to hear you play.
We DON’t kill birds 🦅
Thank you, Brian,
Another winner!
Brian:
A device I use that may be helpful to others in quickly playing the #dim7 on stings 2-5:
On strings 3,4 & 5, make the 1st position Dmin shape, then add the pinkie on the 2nd string. I find this a quick and easy way to visualize and grab the #dim7, using the note on string 5 to name the chord.
I’d be the first to admit that I’m not particularly coordinated when it comes to single note fingering with chord changes. But it’s a must to get a handle on if one wishes to graduate past just strumming. That’s why I love this sort of challenge. It’s the type of lesson I signed up for. Thank you, Brian!
Great lesson! I’ve just recently got down another ragtime lesson on the site, so looking forward to learning another. The bass line notes are a good dexterity workout too 🙂
ANOTHER GREAT LESSON THANKS Brian.
Well, it took 7-1/2 months after my neck surgery to start getting my left hand strength back, but it’s FINALLY coming along! Just in time. To celebrate, I got a new Takemine acoustic guitar, which I love, plays nice & sounds great. I’m still working on hand strength, and since I got the new guitar it has been going faster as long as I play every day. This is a good song to play using finger-style with a thumb pick for the bass line! Thanks, Brian!
Love it! Perfect summertime song to pick on the front porch! Thanks Brian!!!!
Great lesson. Love the sound of this one and it is easy to play.
Awesome lesson Brian thanks
Hey, That “Eric Clapton” look is a keeper. Is there a cover band in your future?
Interesting lesson as always,
but I don’t hear that ragtime syncopation.
Sounds more like country waltz.
I’ll learn it and rag it up myself.
Keep up the good work.
Brian, On EP476 I think it was you mentioned something about a lesson you had worked out but you thought it might have copyright problem.Would like very much to get this lesson if at all
possible.I really like the old gospel songs I grew up on.I believe it was by the Carter Family. Thanks if any way possible. Thanks for all you do.
Great!
Would I be able to play this with fingerpicking, what do you think?
I never use pleks.
Maybe try it?
I also prefer to fingerpick these tunes and it seems to work fairly well with this one.
how do i download the member tablature?
I also prefer to fingerpick these tunes and it seems to work fairly well with this one.
Could you say more about guitar? I think you have in previous videos, but couldn’t find the relevant one.

This is the lesson that finally got me to join. I’ve been toying with the idea for over a year., ever since I first found your lessons on You Tube. You are the only one that teaches the style of guitar I want to play.
Hey Brian
I just wanted to thank you for continuing to post great lessons. I love this piece and the Spanish style piece you posted a while ago. Cheers.
