I found this on another website and I thought I’d post it here.

1.Find the best private instruction you can afford

        2. Write out a regular and disciplined practice schedule and stick to it

        3. Set yourself realistic targets

        4. Concentrate when practicing

        5. Relax and practice slowly

        6. Ensure that you work on what you can’t play – (The hard parts)

        7. Always play with maximum expression

        8. Don’t be too tough on yourself

        9. Definitely do not show off

        10. Think for yourself – (Don’t rely on methods)

        11. Always Be optimistic- “Music washes away the dust of everyday life”

        12. Look for connections between your music and other things

Number 5 is really something when you discover it, suddenly the whole picture of what you are trying to put together comes to you like magic that you just can’t explain.

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

I think #6 is what I need to adhere to on this list. The rest I think I follow pretty closely, except for #1 I’m currently not paying anyone for lessons.
