So Im new on here- I am wondering if there is a path anyone can recommend to possibly kind of follow. I am a pro keybooardist- plenty of theory-fluent reader etc – intermediate guitarist I struggle with finding my way around – even though I have been drilling on fretboard notes for months!
I see there is always a free lesson and then another lesson that follows- not sure about how to navigate this- should I watch free lesson first and then subsequent lessons?
Thx

Hey George, welcome! I think the genius of the lessons Brian does is that he is teaching you to play through short, digestible, compositions.
For the second part of the lessons, you need a premium membership. Well worth it in my opinion, however you can get a lot out of the first section too.
I’d suggest finding a blues player you like; Then search on the site for a lesson in their style.
Rather than rote memorization of the fretboard it can be easier to learn phrases or licks in certain areas then try and connect those to chord shapes (CAGED system) or the pentatonic “boxes”.When you are ready, join the monthly member challenge too. It’s great fun and rewarding to have something to work towards each month, be it a lesson or concept.

Welcome George,
Brian has a vast library of lessons from EVERY GENRE imaginable. The ‘Lessons’ page has a break down of genre categories. Each lesson is stoked with tab, video, backing tracks etc. etc. Find a few that you like and get to work. Also, you can post audio or video of yourself playing. Every month, Brian posts a challenge and sets a due date. It is open to all levels. There are designated discussion pages. You will learn, have fun and make friends. Good luck!John H.

Hi George,
Because this question arises so often, Brian put an icon near the top of the lesson page “Start Here”. this will take you to some of the beginner and theory courses. You must be a premium member to access this. You may have a lot of this knowledge but maybe not as it relates to the guitar fret board. Brian’s recent lessons on triads are fundamental and I understand he will later add them to his introductory material. Other than that, like the others suggested, just jump in and many concepts will be repeated over various lessons. The best learning materials, ie. the backing tracks and Soundslice tablature are only available to premium members and membership is a great value.

Hi,
if not yet a premium member (it is cheap and realy valuable), an alternative is to go through micro lessons. They are easy, short, and target many different subjects and styles. it may help you to find what you like, where you want to go and select later full lessons.Where does the white go when snow melts?

I usually watch the free lesson first. Then dive into the members only clips and tablatures.

Start with something you can play relatively easily. Brian’s teaching focuses on position playing rather than on fretboard name knowledge. You usually hear “third string, fifth fret”, not “C”. There are many easy lessons with simple shapes (triangle, square, box, and making a solo with a small number of notes). Most are in the search title “Easy”, or similar. Starting there gave me a base to work from. Brian frequently describes learning to solo as being like “drying to drink out of a fire hose”, and he frequently strives to simplify a lesson so it is drinkable. Brian does a lot of syncopation, where your experience will come in handy. Pay attention to the timing and to the backing tracks where they are part of the lesson.
Knowing the fretboard involves way more than string/fret names. There are so many relationships and positional things that are important. I think a lot of these come by osmosis if you just go out and work on things that are manageable.

Hi there,
I read a post where Brian said he has a blues course for premium members.
I’m premium member and love this site.
Where do I find the blues course?
Cheers
Gary
