Beginning with Robert Johnson and what is probably the original recording of this song (I’m uncertain if Johnson wrote this) through several modern versions.

Robert Johnson was definitely a great player and singer for his era. Love his vocals, definitely very soulful

Clapton’s version is the closest to the original but Sonny Landreth made it into a great blues stompin’ tune. Joe Bonamassa brought it with a very heavy sound.

All good versions. Which is your favorite?

I just can’t get into Joe Bonamassa. I always feel like he went to the crossroads, sold his soul to the devil – and now it’s missing.

Roy gets a perfect rhythm going on, and the riff he plays is a real earworm, but I could do without the country bass and with little more restraint on the drums. I was half expecting for a banjo player to join in. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really like it, but the dissonance just rubs me the wrong way.

I can’t play the Sonny Landreth video, but I looked into some of his live recording of walking blues, and it seems really good.

I love how Eric sings in this one, I love the volume swells, the relentless tap of the foot, and overall I think he serves the song the best. He has to be my favorite.

Joe’s voice I like. The music in the beginning just didn’t click with me. At the 1:40 mark the slide and the thumping was just a bit too boring to continue listening to it. So at the 2:25 I thought he was going jump out of the suitcase and do something, didn’t happen. Like I said, I liked his voice though.

Sonny is unavailable here, can you send me another link, please.

Eric, his slide playing lacks the heavy punch when needed. Vocals are smooth and pleasant to listen too. Good overall playing yet nothing to really make me stay around and order another whiskey.

Roy’s playing struck me as “real” and has the driving punch to make the song work. I’ll have another whiskey on this one.

Roberts, well, you just can’t beat the front porch on hot summer evening with the guitar in hand. And letting the vocals carry the magic in the evening air.

            1. Robert
            2. Roy

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Kind of agree with Vojtech on this one. I love that Clapton made the effort to keep these wonderful songs alive.
This version gave me goosebumps though.

Thanks GnLguy, instead of doing what I’m supposed to I’m listening to great blues!!

Although I am a BIG fan of Clapton and Bonamassa…Clapton’s guitar playing is too subdued…while Joe’s is too simplistic…although the best voice of all. Had never seen the Roy Rogers version and Landreth is always awesome, while Tedeschi/Trucks does the most justice to the original…so my order:

                Roy Rogers/Sonny Landreth
                Tedeschi Trucks
                Robert Johnson
                Bonamassa
                Clapton

Great Song…..Brian could we try this one without copyright issues?

Are you aware that there is a tab book available for Robert Johnson? I’ve always thought that its best to go back to the original and at least listen but also learn to play the originals as well.

I’ve already planned to work on some of Brownie McGhee’s songs this winter or I would consider the Robert Johnson material. Brownie is a my fav acoustic blues player, very unique. He played behind Sonny Terry’s singing & harmonica and like Hendrix, Brownie didn’t follow the status quo of rhythm guitar.

Roy Rogers playing slide on a 12 string is pretty awesome to say the least.

Hi GnlGuy, yes I am aware and I own a copy(amazing stuff to listen to with the tabs in front of you)…..but the slide parts shut me down….on AMelody it might force me to get it done…..
