Being a new member of the Dull Men’s Club, I’ve started wondering about a lot of dull things, like what the heck are those columns labelled “Voices” and “Posts”. I’ve been a member for almost a decade, so you would think I know exactly what they mean, but I don’t. In olden days, it used to show “Views” instead of “Voices”, so what is the difference? To me, view means something you see, and voice means something you hear.

As for “Posts”, whose posts are we talking about? The total posts in response to the original post? Nope, they don’t add up.

And what about “Last Post”? Is that the last time the original poster posted something? Or is it the last time anyone responded to the original post?

I wonder if it be easier to understand if the titles were changed to simply “Views” and “Responses”. That would tell me how many people have looked at the post, and how many people wrote a response.

Or do all of you guys totally understand how all this works?

And immediately after posting this, I see it shows “Voices” = 1 and “Posts” = 1.

And immediately after posting this response, I see my “Voices” still = 1, but my “Posts” = 2. So far I’ve looked at my original post twice, so shouldn’t it show “Voices” = 2?. And since I’ve left 2 responses, “Posts” seems to mean how many times an actual response has been written. I could amuse myself all day trying to figure this out…….

I think voices is the number of different people/members who comment.
If I’m right, voices should go up to 2 after I submit this

Hmmm…. Right after your post, it went Voices = 2 and Posts = 4. So you must equal 1 voice plus 2 posts. Now I’m even more confused.

Steve, I think who’s on first and what’s on second! That should clear it up!!

Voices are members who comment. Posts are how many posts are in a thread.
                    At least I think.
Maybe used as a quick indicator of how engaged a particular thread is…so if you see 7 voices and 14 posts you could infer that the original poster is responding to comments or a few folks have posted more than once.

I do think there would be a better way to show it.

Hey Steve, How do you get in the DMC? Or maybe I’m automatically in after this comment. But after more than a decade I now get the voice thing. 🎸👏

I think the Dull Men’s Club has been around for a while, but it got really popular after James May (of Top Gear TV show) did a TV series on it. It has a web page, but it operates mainly out of Facebook, because the whole point is you are invited (perhaps morally obligated) to leave comments on the posts about dull things.

In olden days when it showed “Views”, the Views was understood to mean how many people had actually looked at the post, even if they didn’t leave any comment. That’s how Youtube does it. But we don’t seem to have that information anymore. Wouldn’t it be better to just show “Views” and “Comments”, same as Youtube?

It would be nice to have “Views”. I’m sure that number would be higher than “Voices” or “Posts”. I do like the “Voices” count as a measure of how broadly a topic has generated interest.
